Fishing Report, March 8
■ LAKE MEAD -- Striper action has slowed considerably this week, and high winds have hampered anglers or kept them off the water altogether. Some fish are on the skinny side, and anglers generally are finding them in deep water. Still-fishing with cut anchovies is producing a few fish. When they have been able to get on the water, anglers have found slow to fair action for smallmouth and largemouth bass.
■ LAKE MOHAVE -- Willow Beach striper action has slowed considerably in the past week, though swim baits have fooled a few fish. Trout are biting well after the weekly fish plants, with best results coming on PowerBait. Cottonwood Cove hosted the weekend Ultimate Bass Tournament. Six of 11 teams weighed in five-fish bags of 13 pounds or more. Included were two fish that topped 5 pounds. Before the heavy winds arrived, anglers reportedly were seeing smallies on beds.
■ LAUGHLIN -- Stocked rainbows continue to provide good fishing from Davis Camp down river through Casino Row and to Rotary Park. Fish as large as 5 pounds are being caught. Most anglers are finding success with night crawlers, but floating baits and small lures also are catching fish. Striped bass action has been slow, with the best results coming on crank baits and anchovies.
■ URBAN PONDS -- Anglers might find success with a variety of lures, such as Rooster Tails, Super Dupers, Little Jakes and Panther Martins. Bait options include PowerBait, worms, mini-marshmallows and salmon eggs. The limit is three fish.
■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA -- All reservoirs are ice-free. The water still is murky but starting to settle, which should improve fishing.
■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR -- Anglers have been catching rainbow and tiger trout, with most rainbows 12 to 14 inches. PowerBait in green and orange colors have been catching fish. Other effective baits include white jigs with a pink head, night crawlers and a combination of night crawlers and mini-marshmallows. Ice conditions can change almost daily this late in the season, so use caution.
■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR -- The reservoir is ice-free, and anglers reportedly have been catching trout, largemouth bass and crappie off the dam.
