FISHING REPORT, May 23, 2013

■ LAKE MEAD — With shad moving in, striper fishing is improving. Anglers have had success netting shad along the shoreline at 33 Hole and in Vegas Wash. Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass remains, but most already have left their beds and are searching for food. Texas rigs and jerk baits have proven successful.

■ LAKE MOHAVE — With the water temperature much cooler than at Lake Mead, largemouth and smallmouth bass still can be found on beds. Bass in the coves can be taken using rip baits and drop shots. Large schools of carp have been making fishing difficult as they spook the bass when lures are thrown too close. Catfish are becoming more active and can be seen hanging under roots and other cover. They can be enticed with stink baits, cut anchovies and night crawlers.

■ URBAN PONDS — Fishing action has picked up now that the bluegill and bass are finished spawning. The fish are taking mealworms and night crawlers. The catfish plant went off without a hitch last week. Anglers continue to catch a few rainbow trout.

■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — Cold Springs and Hay Meadow reservoirs are giving up stocked trout along with some fish as large as 16 inches. Bass fishing is picking up on both reservoirs. Trout are spawning at Dacey, and the bite is slow. Anglers are catching a few bass with spinner baits. At Adams-McGill Reservoir, anglers are catching bass and trout. Largemouth bass have started to spawn on all reservoirs.

■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — Trout fishing has been good, with anglers finding success using a variety of methods. Anglers who were fly-fishing last weekend caught large numbers of fish on Hare’s Ear nymphs, Woolly Buggers and other nymph patterns tied in darker colors such as olive and black. Bait fishermen have been doing well while fishing from the dock and the dam with PowerBait.

■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — The crappie bite has come on this past week, with fish taking Gitzits and small jigs in white and red coloration suspended below small bobbers. Anglers have been locating most of the fish in the upper end of the lake near the inflow. Largemouth bass have completed their spawn but are slow to take lures or baits. Rainbows are taking PowerBait and mini-marshmallows.
