Forward Mojica helps Lions fend off Bengals

Jessica Mojica provided the perfect answer to Bonanza's zone defense Thursday.
The Sierra Vista senior forward scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in the second half of the Lions' 63-55 victory at Bonanza.
Mojica hit four of the Lions' eight second-half field goals, finding ways to get inside against the Bengals' 2-1-2 zone defense. She also was 6-for-8 from the free-throw line and had eight rebounds, six on the offensive glass.
"She's such a hard worker," Sierra Vista coach Lindsay Whalen said. "She's not flashy at all, but she does a lot of the little things people don't notice."
The Lions (5-2, 1-1 Southwest) had success early beating Bonanza's full-court press with freshman point guard Jeannette Jackson scoring nine of her 16 points in the first quarter to help them to a 23-11 lead.
But Sierra Vista made only 12 of 43 shots the rest of the way as the Bengals cluttered the paint with their zone.
Bonanza trimmed the deficit to 45-44 on Laura Nelson's stick-back basket in the first minute of the fourth quarter, but a three-point play by Jackson started a game-clinching 10-3 run.
"The zone got us back into it, but we spent most of our energy trying to get back (in the game)," Bonanza coach Dean Bosch said. "We had a couple of mental mistakes. There was nothing left in the tank."
Brea Foster added 11 points for Sierra Vista. Foster and Jackson each had nine rebounds for the Lions.
