Four from area gain All-American honors

Four area high school athletes have earned All-American honors for their performances this spring.

Silverado's Mike McDade, Green Valley's Kyle Konicek and Bishop Gorman's Taylor Cole all were named to the Louisville Slugger All-American baseball team.

McDade was selected at catcher, Konicek as an outfielder and Cole as a multi-position player.

Palo Verde boys volleyball star Joe Kauliakamoa also earned All-America mention. Kauliakamoa was selected to the Mizuno Volleyball Boys All-American team.

TRACK HONORS -- Boulder City girls track star Katie Palmer has been named the Gatorade Nevada Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

Palmer, who will run for Brigham Young next season, won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs and the 100 and 300 hurdles at the Class 3A state meet.

Reno High's Cameron Kroll took the boys Gatorade award. Kroll won the Class 4A state pole vault title with a clearance of 17 feet.

GULF COAST SIGNINGS -- A pair of area baseball players have signed pro contracts. McDade, drafted in the sixth round by the Toronto Blue Jays, signed a contract and is playing with the team's Gulf Coast League affiliate.

Arbor View pitcher Michael Blazek, picked in the 35th round by the St. Louis Cardinals, also signed and has joined the team's GCL affiliate.

Former Rancho standout T.J. Wohlever, who pitched for Western Nevada Community College this spring, also signed. Wohlever was selected in the 32nd round by the Atlanta Braves and is pitching for their GCL affiliate.
