Franklin boosts No. 18 Aztecs into tourney final

HONOLULU - Jamaal Franklin had a double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds, and No. 18 San Diego State held off Indiana State 62-55 on Sunday in a semifinal at the Diamond Head Classic.

The Aztecs (11-1) will face No. 4 Arizona in the championship game Tuesday.

Chase Tapley scored 13 points, and the Aztecs won despite poor free-throw and 3-point shooting. San Diego State shot less than 24 percent (4-for-17) from 3-point range, and 64 percent (18-for-28) from the free-throw line.

RJ Mahurin had 15 points and Manny Arop 13 for Indiana State (6-4).

San Diego State pulled ahead for good during a seven-point run that included five straight points from Tapley. With less than five minutes to play, Tapley drove to the basket and was stopped by Jake Odum, who was called for a flagrant foul. Tapley made two free throws, and a quick 3-pointer on the ensuing possession, giving the Aztecs a 51-44 lead.

"We need games like that for later on," Tapley said. "It gives us good experience."

■ No. 4 Arizona 69, Miami 50 - At Honolulu, Mark Lyons scored 19 points, and the Wildcats routed the Hurricanes in a semifinal at the Diamond Head Classic.

Nick Johnson had 12 points, and Kevin Parrom added 11 for the Wildcats (11-0).

Arizona, which led by 26 points with less than three minutes remaining, shot 48.1 percent (25-for-52) for the game.

Kenny Kadji led the Hurricanes (8-2) with 19 points, taking nearly half of his team's shots.

■ Colorado State 88, Virginia Tech 52 - Pierce Hornung had 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Rams (10-2) crushed the Hokies (9-3) in the title game of the Las Vegas Classic at Orleans Arena.

The Rams opened the second half on a 12-2 run and outscored Virginia Tech 55-25 after the break.
