Fredette lifts BYU to win over Aztecs

SAN DIEGO -- Jimmer Fredette scored 33 points and helped key a 15-0 run midway through the second half that carried No. 14 Brigham Young to a 71-69 win over San Diego State on Saturday night, the Cougars' 15th straight victory.
BYU (20-1, 5-0 Mountain West Conference) has the second-longest winning streak in the nation, behind Kentucky's 19 straight.
The Cougars trailed 50-47 before going on their decisive run. Fredette, the Mountain West's leading scorer with a 19.4 average coming in, had five points during the run. Tyler Haws and Jonathan Tavernari also hit 3-pointers as the Cougars took a 60-50 lead with 6:11 to play.
The Aztecs rallied to get within 67-66 on Kawhi Leonard's jumper with 52.7 seconds left before Fredette made a layup with 19.9 seconds to go. BYU's Charles Abouo blocked Kelvin Davis' baseline shot with 4.6 seconds remaining. Davis fouled Fredette, and he made two free throws.
Leonard, a freshman, had 16 points and 11 rebounds for SDSU (14-6, 3-3).
• Utah 71, Air Force 54 -- At Salt Lake City, Marshall Henderson tied his career high with 22 points in only 17 minutes to carry the Utes (10-9, 3-2) over the Falcons (8-10, 0-5).
Utah put the game away with a 12-0 spurt for a 58-34 lead midway through the second half. Henderson capped the run with a layup and two free throws with 8:24 remaining.
• New Mexico 82, Colorado State 64 -- At Albuquerque, N.M., Dairese Gary had 17 points to lead four scorers in double figures for the Lobos (18-3, 4-2) in a win over the Rams.
New Mexico, which won its fourth straight in the MWC, took control with a 16-1 spurt in the first half for a 36-22 lead.
Greg Smith and Dorian Green scored 13 points each to lead Colorado State (11-8, 2-3).
