Fredette powers Cougars to blowout win against Wyoming

PROVO, Utah -- Jimmer Fredette and No. 3 Brigham Young finally settled down Saturday, ending a tumultuous week with a memorable victory.

Fredette scored 38 points, and the Cougars clinched the top seed for the Mountain West Conference tournament with a 102-78 victory over Wyoming. BYU (28-3) and San Diego State both finished 14-2 in the MWC, but the Cougars beat the Aztecs twice.

Charles Abouo scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half for the Cougars, who got their first win since Brandon Davies was kicked off the team for breaking the school's honor code. BYU was coming off an 82-64 home loss to New Mexico on Wednesday night.

"This week's been tough, and a lot of guys it put a little pressure on them to step up," senior guard Jackson Emery said. "But it's great to have this win and I think settle our emotions."

Francisco Cruz scored 13 of his 18 points in the first half for Wyoming (10-20, 3-13), which surrendered 64 points in the second half.

"We did what good teams do, come back and win a game, come back and win a championship," said Fredette, also a senior.

■ No. 9 San Diego State 66, Colorado State 48 -- At San Diego, Kawhi Leonard had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and the Aztecs rolled over the Rams to get a share of the league title, though San Diego State will be seeded second in the conference tournament.

The Aztecs (29-2, 14-2) got the chance to share the title when BYU lost to New Mexico on Wednesday.

Andy Ogide scored 11 for Colorado State (19-11, 9-7), which lost for the fourth time in five games.,

■ New Mexico 66, Air Force 61 -- At Albuquerque, N.M., playing on a heavily taped ankle, Dairese Gary had 17 points and seven assists in his final home game to lead the Lobos over the Falcons.

Gary, who made 11 of 13 free-throw attempts for the Lobos (20-11, 8-8 Mountain West), turned his right ankle midway through the first half, and the three minutes it took to be taped accounted for all his time off the court.

The Falcons (15-14, 6-10) led most of the first half, but New Mexico opened the second half with a 15-5 run to go up 46-38, with Gary scoring five points during the surge.
