Fredette’s 49 points break BYU record in easy win at Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Senior guard Jimmer Fredette scored a school-record 49 points as Brigham Young routed Arizona 99-69 on Monday night.
Fredette topped the BYU record of 47 points, set by Bob Skousen against UCLA in 1961. Fredette also set the McKale Center single-game record, topping the mark of 45 points by Providence's Eric Murdock on Dec. 23, 1990.
Fredette made 16 of 23 field-goal attempts, including 9 of 13 3-pointers, and 8 of 9 free throws.
The Cougars (13-1) swept the Pac-10's Arizona schools this season by a combined 43 points.
Derrick Williams scored 17 points for Arizona (6-6).
• Fresno State 73, Colorado State 50 -- At Fresno, Calif., Greg Smith scored 18 points and Sylvester Seay had 17 to power the Bulldogs past the Rams (8-5).
Mike Ladd scored 12 points for Fresno State (7-7), all on 3-pointers.
• Air Force 77, Niagara 71 -- At El Paso, Texas, Evan Washington scored 19 points and Tom Fow added 17 as the Falcons (7-4) held off a rally by the Purple Eagles (8-5) in the first round of the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational.

•STRICKLAND GUIDES TAR HEELS — Freshman Dexter Strickland scored a season-high 18 points, including a key 3-pointer late, to help No. 9 North Carolina (10-3) gain an 81-67 victory over Rutgers (9-3) at Chapel Hill, N.C. The Tar Heels played without injured fifth-year senior Marcus Ginyard.
•OWLS KEEP FLYING — Ryan Brooks scored 19 points, and No. 18 Temple (10-2) won its sixth straight, 63-39 over Bowling Green (5-5) at Philadelphia. It was the Owls’ first victory as a ranked team since 2001.
•HURT HOOSIER — Indiana coach Tom Crean said top scorer Maurice Creek fractured his left knee and will have surgery today. Creek was hurt in a 90-42 home rout of Bryant.
•PACK NABS WIN — Luke Babbitt scored 22 points and UNR held off Portland 78-69 at Reno. Brandon Fields added 17 points and Armon Johnson 16 as the Wolf Pack (8-5) improved to 7-0 at home. Robin Smeulders scored 22 points to lead Portland (7-5).
