Fumble returns spur Spring Valley

Spring Valley returned two fumbles for touchdowns in the first half, then outgained Western by 232 yards in the third quarter on the way to a 53-7 home win Thursday night.

Anthony Foschi-Gioeli returned a fumble 31 yards for a touchdown, and Devin Dishari had a 40-yard TD return in the first half for the Grizzlies (2-2, 2-1 Southwest League).

Spring Valley quarterback Gerardo Castillo passed for just 21 yards, but two of his four completions went for touchdowns, both to Casey Taravella. He hit Taravella with a 10-yard TD pass with 4:37 to go in the first quarter to open the scoring and tossed a 2-yard TD pass to Taravella with 9:59 left in the third quarter.

Nick Santos rushed for 149 yards, including a 31-yard TD run, on 14 carries to lead the Spring Valley ground attack, which totaled 320 yards. Jerrett Wallace had a 6-yard TD run, Javier Muccigrosso had a 9-yard TD run, and Rondale Scruggs had a 24-yard scoring run, all in the third quarter, for Spring Valley.

Western's touchdown came on a 59-yard pass from Larry Jennings to Vadell Wilson that cut the Grizzlies' lead to 13-7 with 10:14 to go in the first half.

But it was all Spring Valley from there, as the Grizzlies held the Warriors (0-4, 0-4) to 22 yards rushing and 105 yards of offense. Western turned the ball over five times.
