Gaels eliminated from Legion play
August 20, 2007 - 9:00 pm
Tucson, Ariz., rallied for five runs in the top of the 10th inning Sunday to defeat Bishop Gorman 18-13 at the American Legion Western Regional.
The loss ended the Gaels' bid to return to the American Legion World Series.
Daniel Romero led off the 10th with a home run, and Tucson added four more runs on a two-run single by Nate Valdez, and RBI doubles by Aaron Tapia and Josh Tapia.
Tucson trailed 10-6 going into the eighth inning, but scored seven runs on four hits to take the lead.
Gorman ace Donn Roach, who threw a one-hit shutout Friday, entered the game in relief with the bases loaded and the Gaels leading 10-7. But Roach couldn't pitch Gorman out of the jam. He promptly gave up a grand slam to Kevin Hussey, and Marc Damon added a two-run homer later in the inning as Tucson (33-10) took a 13-10 lead.
Gorman (57-22) scored a run in the bottom of the eighth, then rallied for two in the ninth to force the extra inning.
John Rickard and Paul Sewald each singled with one out in the ninth. One out later, Cory Lafler doubled to left-center field to score two runs and tie the game at 13.
Rickard and Lafler each went 3-for-6, and Joey Rickard was 3-for-3. Scott Dysinger added a grand slam for the Gaels to highlight Gorman's six-run seventh.
