Gayle shines on defense in showcase
Ashley Gayle became the state's Class 4A girls basketball Player of the Year on the strength of her defense.
On Wednesday, she showed that defense on a national stage.
Gayle blocked six shots to help the West team to an 80-64 win over the East in the McDonald's All-American Game in Milwaukee.
Gayle, who has signed with Texas, had four points.
In the boys game, Galena's Luke Babbitt had four points in the West squad's 107-102 loss.
• DESERT OASIS -- Desert Oasis High, which is set to open in the fall, announced the hiring of 14 coaches.
Several will come over from Sierra Vista, where Desert Oasis athletic director Larry Goins currently serves as AD.
Among the new hires is football coach Matt Jenkins, who led Canyon Springs into the Sunrise Region semifinals last fall.
Also moving on to Desert Oasis is Sierra Vista softball coach Jerome Streets, who led the Lions to Sunset Region titles in 2005 and 2006.
