Gorman rally falls short in Legion regional
Kearns, Utah, took a 13-run lead and held on for a 13-11 win over Bishop Gorman in the American Legion Western Regional in Kearns on Saturday.
Kearns (35-4) used a 10-run fourth inning to take control early and led 13-0 after the top of the fifth.
Gorman nearly completed a miracle comeback. Paul Sewald's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth cut the lead to 13-11, and the Gaels had the tying run at the plate when the game ended.
"For me this is a testament to our program," Gorman coach Chris Sheff said. "We've got four guys that decided they weren't interested in coming on the trip. They fought and they fought and they fought today, and to have the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning is a testament to the kids that want to be here."
The Gaels rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by Johnny Field's three-run triple.
The Gaels plated three runs in the seventh, highlighted by Neil Lawhorn's two-run double.
Gorman (57-21) plays Tucson, Ariz. (32-10) at noon today in an elimination game.
