Gorman standout nominee for bowl

Bishop Gorman junior football standout Justin Chaisson has been nominated to play in the 2009 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Chaisson, a defensive end who has committed to play at Oklahoma, was one of 472 players from around the country to receive nominations. Ninety players will be chosen to play in the game, which will be played Jan. 3 in San Antonio.

• ALL-STAR GAMES -- As the school year winds down, it's time for the annual senior all-star games.

The Lions All-Star football game will be May 24. The game will be at 7 p.m. at Las Vegas High, pitting the top seniors from the Sunset Region against the best from the Sunrise.

There also will be a skills competition at 7 p.m. on May 23 at Valley. The event will feature about 80 of the area's top junior football players.

The senior all-star baseball game will be at 6 p.m. on May 29 at the College of Southern Nevada.

• 1A HONORS -- Calvary Chapel baseball standout Cameron Harper was named the Class 1A South League Most Valuable Player after leading the Lions to the Southern Region title.

Calvary Chapel's Glen Evans and Lake Mead's Doug Johnson shared South League Coach of the Year honors.

Jared Wadsworth, who led Pahranagat Valley to the Southern Region title game and a berth in this week's state tournament, was named the Central League MVP.

Indian Springs' Eric Hauge was named the Central League Coach of the Year.

In softball, Randall Van Kempen of Mountain View was named the South League's MVP, and her coach, Crystal Van Kempen-McClanahan, was the league's Coach of the Year.

Pahranagat Valley's Mary Higbee was named the Central League MVP, with Beatty's Liz Hensyl getting the Central coaching award.
