HORSE RACING
January 22, 2011 - 12:00 am
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 mile, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 3-year-olds
7 Visual Intensity - Joel Rosario had options and chose to ride for Cliff Sise; flattered when Twicetheappeal won next out.
5 Call Me Later - This is a colt Rosario passed on to ride the chalk; David Flores will win on him if the horse is good enough.
Long Shot - 6 Minutesandtouches
Race 2 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $16,000, Claiming $8,000, 4-year-olds and up
6 Capt. Sparrow - In a race jammed with early speed, Rafael Bejarano on a dead-late closer is dangerous; will sit back and fire late.
2 Dee Dee's Legacy - Ground-hugging trip under Joe Talamo; very wide trip last time from post 11, saves ground tonight.
Long Shot - 8 Beyond Loaded
Race 3 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
8 Coy Princess - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; Paul Atkinson wins races for Dan Hendricks.
9 Zees Chris - Speedball will play catch me if you can; you'll have an edge on me seeing the tote action on the 5 FTS.
Long Shot - 3 Alala
Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $54,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 4-year-olds and up
4 Magical Instinct - Tries turf for the first time, but I like his closing style; the vote of Joel Rosario means much too.
11 Crispy Corey - Like the parking lot post down the hillside turf course; tactical speed to find a nice spot.
Long Shot - 1 The Unusual One
Race 5 - 1 mile, Purse $16,000, Claiming $12,500, 4-year-olds and up
4 Anga - If you draw a line through his last debacle, his prior races look OK; key vote is Rafael Bejarano legging up at 6/1 odds.
9 Royal Import - He runs better with a target; was forced upon the lead in last and folded late, shorter distance will help too.
Long Shot - 11 Big Wags
Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $56,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
10 Torrey Cliffs - Like the parking lot post and the late closing punch; offers good value in a wide-open scrum.
5 Saanneen - Tepid chalk in another hard race; this is one of the best cards this meet to handicap, big evenly matched fields.
Long Shot - 3 She'sfitforaking
Race 7 - 6 furlongs, $150,000 Palos Verdes, 4-year-olds and up
1 Smiling Tiger - Move over Spectacular Bid, here comes Twirling Candy and Smiling Tiger; main fear is bouncing off a record race.
3 Ventana - Bob Baffert has an uncoupled entry so caveat emptor; I'd throw them both in, the barn is winning at nearly 50 percent.
Long Shot - Captain Cherokee
Race 8 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), $75,000 The Sweet Life, Fillies, 3-year-olds
8 Cloneylass - Tepid chalk in another difficult puzzle; like the turn back in distance, she should be closing like a banshee.
7 Advantage Player - If speed is playing well on grass, this is your filly; the turf rail out 15 feet can only help her cause.
Long Shot - 2 Dontbeshy I'll Buy
Race 9 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $54,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds
2 Pink Lollipops - FTS from the Bob Baffert barn, say no more; all his babies work fast, watch the tote board for more clues.
5 Hout Bay - FTS from John Sadler; Joel Rosario and Rafael Bejarano get their pick of the litter in nearly every race.
Long Shot - 7 Dolci Domenica
Best Bet - 2 Pink Lollipops (race 9)
Santa Anita Park Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/3/$12.00; Long Shots, 8/3/$27.00; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.60
Santa Anita Park Totals - 298/79/$497.90; Long Shots, 148/22/$249.00; Best Bets, 17/9/$34.50
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - 9 Come On Donna (3/1) in race 11 at Tampa Bay Downs. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Where's Sterling won at Gulfstream Park paying $5.20 to win, $3.20 to place and $3.00 to show. Stats - 17/14/$115.90
