HORSE RACING
TODAY AT OAK TREE AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $38,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
4 Shane Daniel - Was scratched the other day for this short stack; 3-for-3 seconds but has shown steady improvement.
2 McCovey Cove - A classic hunch horse with the S.F. Giants in the NLCS; the McCovey is Giants great 1B Willie McCovey.
Long Shot - 3 Thirtyfirststreet
Race 2 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $23,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 North Fork - On a two-race win streak since returning off an 18-month hiatus; dead-late closer at the mercy of the pace.
1 Job Boss - Taking a big class drop to face easier; ran a clunker in last, but prior races are competitive.
Long Shot - 4 Gold Star Status
Race 3 - 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 10 feet), Purse $44,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
3 Late Cuddle - Was rank and very wide when out of it at 2/5 odds in last; she is much better than that.
5 Gripsholm Castle - Is winless in 6 U.S. starts, but not for a lack of trying; tactical speed to sit a nice trip.
Long Shot - 1 Catsalot
Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $13,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Stormy Linda - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; big switch to Joe Talamo for the money shot.
7 Warren's Rose - Another dropping in class from MSW to maiden claiming; like the big rider switch to Rafael Bejarano.
Long Shot - 3 Warrens Move Maker
Race 5 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 10 feet), Purse $33,000, Claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Winsome Charm - His Fairplex race was strictly a shot in the dark; his turf races are much stronger, good tactical speed.
4 Kris Silver - Speedball may play cat and mouse with Muny early; Rafael Bejarano has a way of saving some for the end.
Long Shot - 2 Unbridled Story
Race 6 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $38,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
7 Switzers Da Man - He debuted facing much tougher at Del Mar; this horse is named for football coach Barry Switzer.
3 Hollywood Fierce - Plenty of value with this Tapit FTS from Dan Hendricks; sire is vastly underrated with his babies.
Long Shot - 10 Quintons Destiny
Race 7 - 6 furlongs, Purse $40,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 High Note - Worth a shot when the favorite just graduated 11 months ago; this filly at least has won 3 times.
4 Nothing to Fear - Dead-late closer should see a positive pace scenario; value comes from low-percentage jockey.
Long Shot - 3 Light of a Star
Race 8 - 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 10 feet), $150,000 Oak Tree Derby, 3-year-olds
8 Make Music For Me - Sight unseen since the Belmont Stakes; his one turf race was a corker, his preferred surface.
6 Blue Panis - Euro imports have been flying high in U.S. grass stakes; need not be much to beat this group.
Long Shot - 2 Sebastian Flyte
Race 9 - 6 furlongs, Purse $11,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up
9 Unusually Lucky - Broke his maiden at Fairplex, now P Val takes over; chance to steal the verdict in a no-passing-zone race.
5 Three Pointer - Rafael Bejarano will always get live mounts and get overbet in SoCal; will stalk the pace and grind late.
Long Shot - 8 Single Shot
Best Bet - 3 Late Cuddle (race 3)
Oak Tree Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/4/$36.80; Long Shots, 7/1/$3.40; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Oak Tree Totals - 184/54/$347.00; Long Shots, 89/12/$92.00; Best Bets, 11/3/$10.60
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - 7 Joshua Tree (8/1) in race 10 at Woodbine. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, West Ocean ran third at Keeneland paying $2.10 to show. Stats - 172/124/$941.40
