HORSE RACING
July 24, 2010 - 11:00 pm
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $36,000, Claiming $32,000, 4-year-olds and up
All Man - Has strung together 8 great finishes, albeit over 2 years time; proven to fit well at this class level.
Hewitts - Speedball has also proven himself at this class level; did a pop-and-stop in last facing much tougher foes.
Long Shot - Tribal Justice
Race 2 - 1 mile, Purse $57,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Toro Bonito - She ran two bang-up races at Del Mar early on in her career; switch to barn rider Martin Garcia.
Madel - Tepid chalk in an open affair; chased a good one in Rapport last time; second start off a 2-month hiatus.
Long Shot - Nicole H
Race 3 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $48,000, Claiming $50,000, 4-year-olds and up
Asperity - Was stuck on the lead in last and faltered very late; he is better with a target to go after.
Get Funky - Logical chalk has a major caveat in here; a mile distance may be a little farther than he wants to go.
Long Shot - Winsome Charm
Race 4 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Dazzling Display - Bob Baffert has an uncoupled entry, so caveat emptor; the tote board will be singing here.
Pedaltothemedal - Ran a winning race for this class in a nose debut loss; lost to a nice looking Baffert filly Alienation.
Long Shot - Pacific Pride
Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Claiming $10,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Dona Mary - Claimed by Jeff Mullins off a route try; just waiting for this barn to heat up, when it does, look out.
Humble Maggie Go - Tepid chalk in a wide-open scrum; a lot depends on who feels good today, sliding down the claiming ladder.
Long Shot - Havens Lake
Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles (turf), $100,000 California Dreamin' Handicap, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Acclamation - If back class and lone speed mean anything, he'll be tough to catch; ill-fated trip to Monmouth Park.
Bold Chieftain - Old veteran continues to run one good race after another; he's a 7-YO horse, where's his stud duty?
Long Shot - Swift Winds
Race 7 - 6 furlongs, Purse $59,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
Afleet Ruler - Has chased some good ones of late, E Z's Gentleman and Bruce's Dream; could boss them here.
New Bay - Was overmatched in the grade 1 Triple Bend; drops down for a high price tag, any takers you think?
Long Shot - Golden Winner
Race 8 - 1 mile (turf), $150,000 San Clemente Handicap, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Switch - If she can upset Blind Luck, she can upset here too; first turf try should only increase her odds.
Evening Jewel - They don't make them any tougher than her; she has had so many grueling races, when will it start to show?
Long Shot - It Tiz
Race 9 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
Classic Bobby - For forgiving handicappers only; was favored in debut at Golden Gate and ran last, now ships to Del Mar.
He Be Fire N Ice - Even run in debut for Pico Perdomo; he adds Lasix and blinkers on for focus, we'll see.
Long Shot - Storddim
Best Bet - Asperity (race 3)
Del Mar Saturday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/4/$32.60; Long Shots, 10/1/$16.80; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Del Mar Totals - 68/17/$119.40; Long Shots, 34/2/$26.60; Best Bets, 4/2/$15.00
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #1 Maybesomaybenot (6/1) in race 9 at Saratoga. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Saturday, Perfect Casting won at Monmouth Park paying $5.60 to win, $3.40 to place and $3.00 to show. Stats - 133/96/$696.60
