HORSE RACING
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
May Day Rose - Hard to believe in a 5-horse field, Bob Baffert has an uncoupled entry; Martin Garcia had his choice.
Ready Interest - Neil Drysdale rarely wins with a FTS; filly is by More Than Ready, a precocious sire of win early 2-YOs.
Long Shot - Intentional
Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $22,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Roman Charity - Her turf races stink so don't hold that against her; can see her sitting back and flying down the stretch.
Costa Marta - Logical chalk is strictly the one to beat; has lots of early speed, but has had trouble holding on.
Long Shot - Naughty Maria
Race 3 - 7 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Fortunate Appeal - Has run two seconds and is knocking on the door; Martin Pedroza had choices and opted to ride here.
Bell Zone - P Val takes over for Martin Pedroza, who chose to ride the chalk; like the parking lot post in elongated sprint.
Long Shot - Scorsese
Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs, $150,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Silver Swallow - Dead-late closer will see all the action inside of her; she likes the distance and adores synthetics.
Free Flying Soul - Logical chalk has a problem with the elongated sprint distance; could see her as lone speed here.
Long Shot - Alpha Kitten
Race 5 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $62,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 3-year-olds and up
Unusual Smoke - Value pick in a real dart throw of a race; has faced tougher in recent races, will be charging late.
Hey Elvis - Tepid chalk in a wide-open affair; won first off the claim by Doug O'Neill, is aggressively upped in class.
Long Shot - Golden Mexico
Race 6 - 6 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds
Seeuat Sticknstein - Second start off the claim by Doug O'Neill; hated the turf and was overmatched in last, not today.
Good Brother - First off the claim by Ted West; West has had a quiet meet, but has a live one here under Rafael Bejarano.
Long Shot - Majestic Vintage
Race 7 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
Woodmans Luck - Tiny edge in a wide-open affair; you'll have an edge over me in seeing the tote board action.
Mr. Sierra - FTS from the clever Jeff Bonde barn; note he was working bullets at Pleasanton, ships here for debut.
Long Shot - Shane Daniel
Race 8 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 7 feet), $100,000 Solana Beach Handicap, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
U R All That I Am - Rafael Bejarano has the advantageous rail post; can save all the ground and find a seam to rally late.
You Lift Me Up - Did everything but win last time at Santa Rosa; ships to SoCal, but picks up hot riding P Val for the money shot.
Long Shot - Ruffled Feathers
Race 9 - 7 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Royal Import - Second start off a 2-month hiatus; just missed last time and figures to be a lot tighter tonight.
Uncle Greg - Ran evenly in last and may get overlooked; second start since claimed by Jack Carava, expect improvement.
Long Shot - My Last Tycoon
Best Bet - Fortunate Appeal (race 3)
