February 10, 2010 - 10:00 pm
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Claiming $12,500, 4-year-olds and up
Trail Mix - Speedball is clearly the controlling early speed; Rafael Bejarano can nurse him along, catch me if you can.
Acquire the Fire - Enough tactical speed where the leader shouldn't get too far away; key will be if he can catch him.
Long Shot - Malibu Canyon
Race 2 - 1 mile, Purse $16,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Lucy Got Lucky - Shown improvement in 2 starts since claimed by Julio Canani; edge is 2-turn route experience.
Allie Wolff - Strong debut to lose by a nostril; stetching out around 2-turns, that's the main question tonight.
Long Shot - Stormy Anna
Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $25,000, Claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
Bonfante - Chances of this staying on sod are slim; expect a typical Bejarano ride, sit chilly and fire fast late.
Within Reason - If the synthetic is wet, it may favor the speed; chalk is lone speed and could prove tough to catch.
Long Shot - All Man
Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $13,000, Claiming $12,500, 4-year-olds and up
Abalanche - Tiny edge in a crap shoot of a race; claimed by Doug O'Neill, need not improve much to win this.
Boo Too - Did everything but win last time in a strong effort; capable of improving, which could win this heat.
Long Shot - Indy Ride
Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $38,000, Claiming $50,000, Fillies, 4-year-olds
Dash Dot Dash - Grinder has come up a hair short in her last few starts; due for some racing luck as a consistent sort.
Life by R R - Powerhouse win in last was so strong, a bounce may be in order; repeat effort would surely win it.
Long Shot - Kimmyv
Race 6 - 7 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Lana's Lovely - David LaCroix adds blinkers on for the money shot; big rider switch to Joel Rosario, the cards are stacked.
Kiss'em for Me - Big rider switch to Rafael Bejarano signals something good; parking lot post to clock the early speed.
Long Shot - Sheskey
Race 7 - 1 mile, Purse $52,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 4-year-olds and up
Mythical Power - Hard to go against Bob Baffert, as hot as he's been; only thing to slow him down was a cancelation.
Deal Breaker - Broke some hearts with a nose win in last; Bejarano had choices and sticks here for trainer Mike Mitchell.
Long Shot - Calimonco
Race 8 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $13,000, Claiming $12,500, 4-year-olds and up
Spinning Sound - Dead late closer drops in class and picks up more ground to rally; can you say Rafael Bejarano again?
Runfortherosesdan - Ran a better than looked race in last while facing tougher; cuts back in distance and class, look out.
Long Shot - Crash Landing
Best Bet - Lucy Got Lucky (race 2)
Santa Anita Sunday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/4/$17.60; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals - 471/124/$790.60; Long Shots, 237/35/$382.00; Best Bets, 29/11/$54.40
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #8 Mahvelous Bert (4/1) in race 9 at Tampa Bay. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Food Rules ran out at Tampa Bay. Stats - 29/19/$129.30
