HORSE RACING
August 22, 2009 - 9:00 pm
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $51,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
Malibu Song - Chalk has been lighting up the a.m. with fast drills; watch the tote board for confirmation.
V Jack - Like expensive stablemate Mi Sueno, he is bred to go long; might win just on precious talent alone.
Long Shot - Remember Mike
Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $52,000, Claiming $62,500, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Ride Me Fast - Bob Baffert has an uncoupled entry; this is the longer priced filly, class drop will help.
Miss Dixie Dancer - Been away 10-months, but two of her best races came at Del Mar; sleeper at a giant price.
Long Shot - Red White and Brew
Race 3 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $60,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Linda Lou - Sprinter stretching out draws the rail, which is 7-feet out; Flores plays catch me if you can.
Good Time Sally - Big MSW turf win, now steps up to face winners for the first time; will be flying late.
Long Shot - Alpine Yodel
Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $47,000, Claiming $50,000, 4-year-olds and up
Headache - Del Mar lover got claimed by Jack Carava; he's won 3-of-4 starts here, only fear is the class rise.
High Standards - Speedball ran like a short horse in last; second start off a 9-month hiatus, expect better.
Long Shot - Yankee Visionary
Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $22,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 2-year-olds
Sticky Candy - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; chased Sterling Outlook in debut.
Straightomidnight - A.C. Avila has been lighting up the tote board of late; took action in debut, adds blinkers on.
Long Shot - Cardiff Giant
Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $60,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up
Mr. Hot Stuff - Was way overbet in first start off a 2-month hiatus; adds blinkers on and will be much sharper.
Viscount - Even run in last off a 10-month hiatus; key is Garrett Gomez remains loyal, adding blinkers on too.
Long Shot - Pearl Fisher
Race 7 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $51,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
Indian Firewater - Bob Baffert as an uncoupled trio in here; Garrett Gomez usually has his pick of the litter.
Sidney's Candy - Tested Tiny Woods in last, that one got blasted in Saratoga stakes; like the Candy Ride get.
Long Shot - Magic Max
Race 8 - 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 7 feet), $350,000 Del Mar Oaks, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Lexlenos - Alex Solis jumps off one of the favorites to ride this filly; value and a big shot at 8/1 odds.
Well Monied - Logical chalk ran a huge second in the American Oaks; no one was beating Gozzip Girl that day.
Long Shot - Strawberry Tart
Race 9 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $20,000, Claiming #12,500, 4-year-olds and up
Western Comment - Ran like a short horse in last for Jeff Mullins; key for me is Gomez remains loyal in a cheap race.
Esporte Dos Reis - Sharp win last time over many of these; cheap horses seldom repeat, let's give him a chance.
Long Shot - Trevor's Clevor
Race 10 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Tamarack Smarty - Ran a winning race for this level in last; should improve in second start off a 4-month hiatus.
Raise the River - He has had a zillion chances, but can't win; tactical speed to figure a way to save some ground.
Long Shot - Cee's Closing Time
Best Bet - Lexlenos (race 8)
Del Mar Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/5/$34.60; Long Shots, 9/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Del Mar Totals - 392/97/$680.60; Long Shots, 206/22/$252.80; Best Bets, 21/8/$33.00
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #1 Christina's World (9/2) in race 7 at Delaware Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, China ran out at Saratoga. Stats - 126/96/$714.30
