HORSE RACING
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $62,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Moon de French - Absolutely airmailed the field off a 20-month hiatus; she has freakish talent, high ceiling.
Rainbow's Song - Solid second off an 11-month layoff; this looks to me like an ice cold exacta play.
Long Shot - Petite Cherie
Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Moon Over Malibu - At this bottom level, you can't expect a whole lot; consistent sort is a grinder.
Sweet Allie Marie - The less starts you have at this bottom level is better too; just two career starts.
Long Shot - Juicy Lucy
Race 3 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $65,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Jehan - Was flattered when Strawberry Tart lost the San Clemente by a nose; meant to be a confidence booster.
Hot 'n Dusty - She's reached her class level, but tries hard every time; saves ground under Alex Solis.
Long Shot - Midnight Crush
Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Bubbley Blonde - Speedball tactics could be effective with these; she figures to play catch me if you can.
Past Curfew - Tepid chalk in a wide open race; Mike Smith figures to see a perfect stalking trip.
Long Shot - Good Night Gyrene
Race 5 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $51,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
Bench the Judge - I'm puzzled as the DRF lists him as a KY-bred facing Cal-breds; flattered by Lions Story win.
Sammy's a Runnin - Good try in debut for a price tag; there isn't much difference between Cal-bred MSW and $40K.
Long Shot - Ministers Power
Race 6 - 1 mile, Purse $44,000, Claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds and up
Sensational Score - Returns to the scene of his best races; Mike Mitchell puts him in a nice spot.
Headache - He's won 2-of-3 Del Mar synthetic starts; dead late closer has the right style to excel.
Long Shot -Surf Town
Race 7 - 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Susan's Wildcat - She is overdue for some racing luck; tactical speed to sit a perfect stalking trip.
Over Andover - Logical chalk was a stride late in last; closers like her are always at the mercy of pace.
Long Shot - Ruffled Feathers
Race 8 - 1 1/16th miles, $250,000 San Diego Handicap, 3-year-olds and up
Well Armed - Eoin Harty got Colonel John to win off a long layoff; he can likely due the same with this guy.
Kelly Leak - He beat Mine That Bird at Sunland, I guess he can win here; exits some bullet workouts.
Long Shot - Sangaree
Race 9 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $17,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up
Fight On - Hard to use the all button in a 12-horse field; Doug O'Neill claimed for $$20K, drops in for $10K.
Trevor's Clever - Dead late closer should see an honest pace to chase; has lots of back class to rely upon.
Long Shot - Kalookan Event
Race 10 - 6 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Reckless Capote - He's had a lot of chances, but seldom against a field this bad; bugboy takes the weight off.
Objectified - Note that he has started poorly in both career starts; nice run last time off a 10-month hiatus.
Long Shot - Trueno
Best Bet - Jehan (race 3)
Del Mar Saturday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 20/6/$28.60; Long Shots, 10/2/$23.00; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.60
