TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $46,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds
No Saint But Sweet - Slight edge in a difficult opener; goes 2-turns for the first time, is bred to handle it.
Third Dawn - Tepid chalk in a wide open race; looked like a winner at the eighth pole, then coughed it up.
Long Shot - Saint Cindy
Race 2 - 1 mile, Purse $14,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Good Shot Mally - Sliding down the claiming ladder to this low level; her back races, if repeated, can crush these.
Our Storm - Was overmatched in last after graduating two races ago; she will find this group a lot easier to face.
Long Shot - Mascota Spa
Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds
Mr. Holmes - Ran a clunker last time as a big favorite; Jeff Mullins switches to Rafael Bejarano for the money shot.
Dial Four Peace - Speedball faltered badly with blinkers off in last; Doug O'Neill puts the hood back on here.
Long Shot - Marcade
Race 4 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $25,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 4-year-olds and up
Troubletimesthree - Has run two decent races since claimed by Leonard Powell; has a good shot at a square price.
Unusual Smoke - Tepid chalk appears to be a sharp claim two back for A.C. Avila; has been a consistent check casher.
Long Shot - The Firebird
Race 5 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $13,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds
Razor Cut - Chance to upset at a big price due to class drop; ran evenly in last and has room to improve.
Magic Mike - Tepid chalk in a difficult race; dead late closer slides down the claiming ladder with Rafael Bejarano.
Long Shot - Tribal Deal
Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Lavender Touch - Looked like a winner in last until the final 50 yards; she is improving for Jeff Mullins.
Midnight Crush - Second best in debut behind the highly regarded Tucson Evening; Neil Drysdale babies keep improving.
Long Shot - Kicken Vixen
Race 7 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $52,000, Allowance, 4-year-olds and up
Pool Play - Ran evenly in last in a turf marathon; I'm convinced he's a better horse over a synthetic surface.
Elysium Fields - He may win at short odds; keys for me are an 11-month layoff and debut over a synthetic surface.
Long Shot - Nima's Pad
Race 8 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds
White Lace Jimmy - Good try off the claim and going long for Mark Glatt; like the turn back in distance for this.
Marquet Rebel - Tepid chalk in a difficult finale; he found his best stride late, as many FTS overcome greenness.
Long Shot - Fair the Storm
Best Bet - Lavender Touch (race 6)
Santa Anita Monday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/4/$22.60; Long Shots, 9/1/$11.20; Best Bet, 0/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals - 651/156/$1,065.20; Long Shots, 326/50/$583.60; Best Bets, 37/12/$47.20
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #3 Mor Chances (9/5) in race 8 at Aqueduct. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet. On Monday, Crowninshield won at Philadelphia and paid $7.80 to win, $4.20 to place and $3.20 to show. Stats - 11/9/$66.50
