TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $33,000, Claiming $40,000, Fillies, 4-year-olds
Thunder and Ice - Brian Koriner filly bottomed out the field in last; she could be loose on the lead again.
Dizzy Up the Girl - Got burned up in a speed duel last time; suspect Joel Rosario may tuck in just off the pace.
Long Shot - Our Road Scholar
Race 2 - 1 mile, Purse $16,000, Claiming $12,500, 4-year-olds
Unusual Smoke - Should be dead fit exiting 3 NoCal turf routes; Quinonez will sit a trip and grind it out late.
Turn to the King - Tepid chalk is among 3 horses that won its last start; John Sadler adds blinkers on too.
Long Shot - Cable Dancer
Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $53,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 4-year-olds and up
Band of Thunder - Has won twice since claimed by Mike Mitchell; been unlucky or he would have won more.
Talk of a Cat - Like the parking lot posts going down the hillside turf course; Gomez will time his move.
Long Shot - Goldsville
Race 4 - 1 mile, Purse $46,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Ruffled Feathers - Typical Gallagher debut, slow early, fast late; appears a natural for a 2-turn race.
Imforeal - Tepid chalk in a wide open race; Chantal Sutherland does best when nursing a real speedball.
Long Shot - Mo Cheese
Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 4-year-olds and up
Voodoo's Run - Appeared ready to win when encountered some stretch trouble; small class drop can only help.
Kaffeinator - Can visualize a Bejarano-Gomez stretch duel; big rider switch to Gomez for the money shot.
Long Shot - Pacific Halo
Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $33,000, Claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Brendolyn - John Sadler has her in a terrific groove; nice post for the hill, Gomez sits a trip and fires late.
Foxy Games - She figures to be the speed of the speed; Aaron Gryder knows the turf rail is out 24 feet today.
Long Shot - Dona Amelia
Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, 4-year-olds and up
River Echo - Been away 9-months, but has been working well for return; key for me is Rafael Bejarano up.
It's in God's Hands - Speedball has only one way of going; he excelled at Hollywood Cushion track, nowhere else.
Long Shot - Devoted Magic
Race 8 - 1 mile, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Play Nine - Ran very well off the claim by Gary Sherluck; if she improves one step she'll be tough to handle.
Moon Moment - When Bejarano rides in a cheap race like this, there must be a good reason; watch the tote for clues.
Long Shot - Latego Light
Best Bet - Brendolyn (race 6)
Santa Anita Sunday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/6/$39.80; Long Shots, 9/1/$9.60; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals - 151/42/$288.00; Long Shots, 75/10/$106.40; Best Bets, 9/3/$12.00
