OAK TREE AT SANTA ANITA
By Richard Eng
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
O Firefly - Solid improvement in first race off the claim by John Sadler; like that Garrret Gomez stays.
Plaza Queen - Logical chalk nosed out O Firefly in last; there's not a whole lot different between them.
Long Shot - Crazy Tricia
Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $37,000, Claiming $50,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Kiss the Cat - Obliterated unsuspecting foes in last; when Mike Mitchell gets them good, they stay good.
Trash Master - Gets class relief from two stakes for this open claimer; this field is more like it.
Long Shot - Grace Gryder
Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Suances Express - FTS from the Darrell Vienna barn that has been hot; watch the tote board for clues.
I Catherine - Logical chalk has done the most among those with experience; should be forwardly placed.
Long Shot - Spanish Bunny
Race 4 - 7 furlongs, Purse $47,000, Living Legends Race, Optional claiming $32,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Swift Demand - I'm not betting the race because I don't want anything getting in the way of enjoying it.
Waafi - I suspect Chris McCarron has been riding with his students at his jockey school in Kentucky.
Long Shot - Major Smoke
Race 5 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $29,000, Claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds and up
Gray Black N White - Speedball has been a model of consistency this year; claimed by Jeff Mullins.
Devoted Magic - Beat nothing last time but looked good doing it; tries grass for the very first time.
Long Shot - Ballistic Heat
Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
Hoist the Sail - Has a ton of speed and like the turn back in distance; main speed foe is to his right.
Taxi Fleet - Even run last time off a 2-month freshening; rider switch to Rafael Bejarano signals intent.
Long Shot - Go Flags Bro
Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $44,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Ocean Style - Sharp improvement in second start, Jim Cassidy now tries her on turf; has the pedigree for it.
Love Apple - Well bet filly from a low percentage barn; she too is trying grass for the very first time.
Long Shot - All too Solid
Race 8 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $47,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
North Rodeo - Logical chalk getting class relief from Cal Cup for this; has lacked a killer instinct late.
Summertime - Like the turn back in distance to this elongated sprint; figures to be closing fast in the lane.
Long Shot - King City Kitty
Race 9 - 6 furlongs, $75,000 Jack Goodman, 2-year-olds
Details R Sketchy - Regressed in last but was still easily best; stepping stone race to the Hollywood Futurity.
Backbackbackgone - Been away 5-months since a pair of spectacular wins; may need a race before stretching out.
Long Shot - Ventana
Race 10 - 6 furlongs, Purse $44,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
Tom Quinn - Leap of faith that the horse we saw 2 races ago was the real Tom Quinn; poor start hurt in last.
Now and Zen - FTS from the Mike Mitchell barn; he hires main man Rafael Bejarano, solid work tab for debut.
Long Shot - Teamwork
Best Bet - Details R Sketchy (race 8)
