HORSE RACING

TODAY AT DEL MAR

By Richard Eng

Post Time 2 p.m.

Race 1 - 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $60,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Justice Is Brief - She's not big on winning, but is usually close up on grass; like the reunion with top jock Tyler Baze.

Paloma's Flight - Won her turf debut like this is her preferred surface; ground saving post, Alex Solis asks for run late.

Long Shot - Bran Jammas

Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up

Flier Money - Been away 4-months since exiting a pair of key races; returns with blinkers on and new pilot in David Flores.

Draft Choice - Logical chalk is establishing himself as a money burning favorite; he'll win at odds on, but who will care?

Long Shot - Kaptain Kordough

Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $26,000, Claiming $20,000, 4-year-olds and up

Presidential Cause - Has failed twice at this level, but is still favored; key for me is Rafael Bejarano remains loyal.

World War - Claimed by A.C. Avila who doesn't have Omar Berrio to ride for 6-months; no tears with Joel Rosario up instead.

Long Shot - Pinpoint

Race 4 - 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Cherryblossommiss - Ran a bang up race last time to just miss; if she can transfer that form to sod, she'll be awful tough.

Alley Theater - Outran her long odds last time; John Glenney is good for a couple bombs each Del Mar, high odds are better.

Long Shot - Humor Her Along

Race 5 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up

Saxophone - Roger Stein drop down ran a winning race for this class level last time; repeat run for Bejarano will be enough.

Soda Pop Kid - Claimed by Gary Sherluck, he was run in a spot with no chance; dropped down, he has a big shot here at a price.

Long Shot - Oldtophatandtails

Race 6 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds

Watsnewpussykat - FTS from Mike Mitchell has gotten some write up; sire Werblin was extremely quick, has win early pedigree.

Palacio de Amor - Logical chalk should still offer value due to low percentage trainer; first time Lasix and Victor Espinoza.

Long Shot - G's Heavenly Union

Race 7 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $60,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up

Dakota Phone - He had been hanging for other jocks, got up in time for Bejarano; he figures to be flying fast in the stretch.

Hiatus - The race shape really favors an off the pace type to get up late; after a test drive debut, he fired big to graduate.

Long Shot - Bad Boy

Race 8 - 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 7 feet), $350,000 Del Mar Oaks, Fillies, 3-year-olds

Satan's Circus - Ran her heart out to lose to grade 1 star Pure Clan; Clement may have the elixir to avoid the Euro bounce.

Storm Mesa - Logical chalk off a sensational win in the San Clemente; overcame trouble to win, suspect traffic from the rail.

Long Shot - Misty Ocean

Race 9 - 7 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up

Bigum - Like the turn back in distance from a route to an elongated sprint; enough speed to sit a cozy trip and fire late.

Elusive Chief - Threw in a clunker last time at 5/2 odds; his races before that are all competitive with this slow group.

Long Shot - Cool Commander

Best Bet - Saxophone (race 5)

Del Mar Monday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/6/$48.60; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Del Mar Totals - 431/106/$747.80; Long Shots, 224/32/$416.80; Best Bets, 27/7/$32.60
