HORSE RACING
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 mile, Purse $18,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up
Plan For Fun - Reclaimed by Jeff Mullins, a solid trainer angle; suspect the track will favor closers, despite the watering.
Refinery - If the watering helps the early speed, this guy becomes a prime candidate; sprinter stretching back out in distance.
Long Shot - Glimmering Pete
Race 2 - 5 furlongs (turf), Purse $59,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Earnednoevergiven - Could sit a perfect trip if a speed duel erupts in front of him; just needs to find room in the stretch.
Pocosin's Game Boy - Primary speedball will have others tracking him early; been away 7-months, but this is the Del Mar meet.
Long Shot - Put It in Writing
Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Ima Offended - Speedy sort was heavily favored in her career debut; she appears primed for her best on opening day.
Chimera Star - Garrett Gomez is riding the meet so watch how he cuts into other jockey's business; will be closing fastest.
Long Shot - June My Love
Race 4 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $32,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
Carona Time - Very good turf debut in last and may have found his preferred surface; suspect will offer value in this spot.
Surf Academy - Showed some oomph last time in first start off a 3-month hiatus; I like horses that are pointed for this meet.
Long Shot - Table Four Ten
Race 5 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
Donthaveatizzy - Talk about a dart throw race, you'll have the edge of seeing the tote board action; exiting a bullet workout.
Tactful - One of many FTS who look like they can run a little bit; key for me is Garrett Gomez riding for Carla Gaines.
Long Shot - I Wanna Getaway
Race 6 - 1 mile (turf), $75,000 Oceanside, 3-year-olds
Sky Cape - The winner will probably be the horse with the best trip; he has really come to hand for Mulhall since move to sod.
Kilderry - Another good claim by trainer Mike Mitchell; he is 8/1 in the morning line but is improving with every start.
Long Shot -Moral Compass
Race 7 - 6 furlongs, Purse $29,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Sherry's High - Parking lot post but that'll give Joel Rosario a chance to clock the field; big class drop can only help.
Mama Luc - Beaten chalk should enjoy the turn back in distance from a 2-turn route; Gomez will find her best stride late.
Long Shot - Princess Traci
Race 8 - 1 mile (turf), $75,000 Oceanside, 3-year-olds
Afleet Ruler - Closer got done in by a slow early pace in last; he showed his muster two back when second to Two Step Salsa.
Dixie Chatter - This is actually class relief from four straight graded stakes to face these; key will be it's his turf debut.
Long Shot - Raingear
Race 9 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $21,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Bigum - Drops to the bottom maiden claiming class in search of victory; his race last time, if repeated, would beat these.
Officer M. D. - Another taking a class drop to this bottom rung; going long for the first time, should be forwardly placed.
Long Shot - Devive
Best Bet - Bigum (race 9)
Hollywood Sunday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/7/$52.80; Long Shots, 8/2/$12.80; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Hollywood Final Totals - 983/229/$1,563.60; Long Shots, 496/50/$495.80; Best Bets, 58/24/$98.00
