Horse Racing

TODAY AT DEL MAR

By Richard Eng

Post Time 2 p.m.

Race 1 - 1 mile, Purse $65,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up

7 Price - Third start off a 7-month hiatus; broke his maiden at Del Mar, blinkers off and a perfect cycle for a big race.

1 Eye On Jacob - No shock if Bob Baffert wins the meet opener at Del Mar; first of scores of live Baffert horses at the meet.

Long Shot - 4 Times Gone By

Race 2 - 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $29,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up

8 Battle School - Second start off a 7-month hiatus; got a nice test drive in last, now should be tight for the money shot.

5 Red Scare - Carla Gaines puts the blinkers on; will gander that Chantal Sutherland will be a flat bet profit for the meet.

Long Shot - 2 Isle of Prado

Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds

7 Sir Ed - Was flattered in last when Deluxe Bus won right back; can't ignore the huge class drop, these will be his friends.

1 Devour - Doug O'Neill has an uncoupled entry; no surprise if he runs 1-2 in here, another slidng down the claiming ladder.

Long Shot - 6 Regroup

Race 4 - 5 furlongs, Purse $63,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds

4 Lady Fairbanks - Owner West Point loves to win races at Del Mar; got a lot from her debut, she should be ready to fire today.

10 Cha Cha Latte - Logical chalk ran a typical debut, slow early, fast late; be wary of the myriad of FTS in the field.

Long Shot - 7 Weemissfrankie

Race 5 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $63,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

8 Correspondent - Did everything but win last time in a fine try; she is meant to be a good one if she can ever get her diploma.

10 Simply Carina - Speedball tactics on the Del Mar green; she has some big speed figures to run back too, main contender.

Long Shot - 2 Last Sting

Race 6 - 6 furlongs, Purse $29,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up

2 Domonation - Huge class drop could either win by a pole, or not finish; he is inherently faster than these if right.

11 Fire in Excess - If you bet California races, you always respect Steve Myadi; takes the blinkers off and is a wild card.

Long Shot - 6 Get My Fix

Race 7 - 6 furlongs, Purse $65,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

1 Queenie Marini - Uncoupled Bob Baffert entry has this surrounded with his third string; won while running a slower Beyer in last.

2 Money Lover - Bob Baffert doesn't claim many, but he's dangerous when he does; ran two good races at Del Mar on his resume.

Long Shot - 9 Fullbridled's Sis

Race 8 - 1 mile (turf), $100,000 Oceanside, 3-year-olds

3 Mr. Commons - Was ambitiously placed in the Preakness; John Shirreffs is conservative, so this colt is very highly regarded.

8 Extensive - More Tom Proctor ammo for Del Mar; like that Garrett Gomez is riding first call for the barn, loaded for bear.

Long Shot - 6 Temple's Door

Race 9 - 1 mile, Purse $30,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up

8 Gilligan - Uncoupled Mike Mitchell entry figures to be double tough; won 3 straight since being claimed, in dead stroke.

4 Whirling Thunder - Tepid chalk in a wide open affair; the drop down is a red flag, but could win by a pole if right.

Long Shot - 10 North Fork

Race 10 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up

5 Gahnzo Bob - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; blinkers on, need not be much to graduate.

10 Ignited - Key vote is the loyalty of Rafael Bejarano; good tactical speed to sit a forward paced trip.

Long Shot - 14 Boomtown

Best Bet - 4 Lady Fairbanks

Hollywood Park Sunday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/6/$42.80; Long Shots, 9/2/$20.60; Best Bet, 1/1/$7.60

Hollywood Park Final Totals - 914/241/$1,636.60; Long Shots, 450/73/$803.40; Best Bets, 51/23/$89.60

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #3 Miss Lewis (9/5) in race 1 at Delaware Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Judy the Beauty won at Woodbine paying $5.90 to win, $3.40 to place and $2.70 to show. Stats - 116/73/$600.20
