July 26, 2008 - 9:00 pm
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 - 5 furlongs (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $59,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Billie Bob - Speedball figures to play catch me if you can for trainer Wesley Ward; firm turf and rail out will both help.
Famous Secret - Dead late closer will try to rally from the clouds if the early pace is too fast; Talamo is a patient rider.
Long Shot - Aunt Pink
Race 2 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $24,000, Claiming $16,000, 4-year-olds and up
Judge Gallivan - Speedball will hope that Del Mar waters the Polytrack today; claimed by Bill Spawr, well spotted to win.
I Beat the Fire - He beat Judge Gallivan last time, now both horses have changed hands; been claimed in his last 4 starts.
Long Shot - The Supply Program
Race 3 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $63,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Vixiana - She showed a lot of promise in her MSW graduation; for the first time she goes 2-turns and faces winners.
Be Glorious - Bobby Frankel underachiever still must be respected in this modest condition; tactical speed to sit a trip.
Long Shot - Chelcee's Hope
Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $33,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Love Happens - Big class drop and decent performance point to her in this modest spot; Mike Mitchell is awful tough to beat.
King City Kitty - Was flattered last time when Perfect Cast won her next start; will sit a trip and grind it out late.
Long Shot - Concettina
Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $32,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
Our Superstar - The Peter Miller barn is firing on all cylinders this meet; he adds blinkers on to a horse with lots of gas.
Stormy Game - Logical chalk off a monster win beating overmatched foes; the first race against winners is always a challenge.
Long Shot - Army Officer
Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $68,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
Charmo - Even though he's 7, he may be worth the rich claim; may not be a graded stakes horse anymore, but he still can run.
Gem Proof - Will this be another flattering claim by Mike Mitchell; 5-YO has always had ability, interesting barn switch.
Long Shot - Tent
Race 7 - 6 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
Speight the Halo - Did everything but win in a very good debut; if he improves a step, he could literally crush these.
Fassnacht - Dead late closer is always coming late to pick up the pieces; a faster pace would obviously help his cause.
Long Shot - Massone
Race 8 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $59,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up
Seven Point One - This might be a tournament play at 15/1 odds; has shown steady improvement since Vladimir Cerin took over.
Fine Flyer - This colt will be overbet guaranteeing all others will offer lots of value; he has underachieved so far.
Long Shot - Stand Tall
Race 9 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 7 feet), $150,000 San Clemente Handicap, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Storm Mesa - Midwest shipper figures to be overlooked with unknown connections; she's a stone runner who must be respected.
Missit - She may qualify as trouble prone, some of it by her own doing; saves all the ground, looks for a seam in the lane.
Long Shot - Sensational Love
Race 10 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Tizsong - Speedy sort has enough gas to overcome a parking lot post; if the track is watered, it'll aid the speedballs.
Lotacat - Dead late closer will benefit from a too aggressive early pace; Joe Talamo is perfect to sit and pounce late.
Long Shot - Stag On The Run
Best Bet - Billie Bob (race 1)
