July 30, 2008 - 9:00 pm
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Princess Traci - Mike Mitchell barn is firing on all cylinders; he drops this mare in class to lose her and win the purse.
Topaz Moon - Claimed by Jorge Alcala who takes the blinkers off; has already proven she is competitive at this low class.
Long Shot - No Name Just Game
Race 2 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Sunshine In - Off slowly and was left with way too much to do last time; Isais knows him better, will time the move earlier.
Toppler - Has tactical speed to sit a decent trip; facing the slowest group of his life, it's now or go up to NoCal.
Long Shot - Brite Ruler
Race 3 - 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Precious Union - Given a brief 2-month freshening; showed talent last time when bet way down, stretches out around 2-turns.
Love to Siphon - Ground saving trip for Joel Rosario; amazing how ice cold the Bob Baffert barn has been this year.
Long Shot - Alley Theater
Race 4 - 1 1/8th miles, Purse $18,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up
Norway House - He continues to outrun his generous odds; proven at this class and consistent over the synthetic surfaces.
War Scandal - Won his first race in over a year last time; Tyler Baze takes over and he could easily repeat the effort.
Long Shot - Pawnee
Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $59,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Swiss Ski - Was closing well last time before tiring very late; he might be better as a closing sprinter than a route horse.
Crimson Cowboy - Nice wire to wire win in NoCal fairs; the gap between up north and down south has been diminishing.
Long Shot - Steady Demand
Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $63,000, Optional claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
One On the House - Maybe he's regained his confidence where he can handle these; like that Rafael Bejarano remains loyal.
Earnednevergiven - Mike Machowsky adds blinkers on for this effort; he ran well sprinting, now stretches back out around 2-turns.
Long Shot - Unvarnished
Race 7 - 1 1/2 miles, $150,000 Cougar II Handicap, 3-year-olds and up
Big Booster - No shame losing in the grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup; faced a field like this in the Gallant Man and just cruised.
Tissy Fit - Has improved since claimed four races ago by John Sadler; natural long winded type, he'll be grinding late.
Long Shot - Zappa
Race 8 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 2-year-olds
Cach D Fish - I have absolutely no clue in the finale; plenty of FTS and racers with horrible resumes, watch the tote for clues.
Catalina Fog - At least he ran something resembling a horse race last time; small, but subtle, class drop can only help.
Long Shot - It's Gotta Be Us
Best Bet - Sunshine In (race 2)
Del Mar Monday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/3/$19.00; Long Shots, 7/1/$14.00; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.60
Del Mar Totals - 196/45/$369.80; Long Shots, 101/10/$111.60; Best Bets, 12/4/$19.20
