April 17, 2008 - 9:00 pm
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 2 furlongs, Purse $36,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Deb's Mojo - Didn't run a typical Wesley Ward debut, no early speed; expect a sharper effort off a bullet workout.
Soup Deeohdouble G - FTS from Frank Monteleone, from an underrated baby sire; like that the main man Martin Pedroza is up.
Long Shot - Gonging Wild
Race 2 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $57,000, Optional claiming $32,000, Cal-breds, 4-year-olds and up
Joy's Comet - Been away 3-months since a good try facing tougher; his solid synthetic surface record points him out.
Raise the Heat - The maestro Jerry Hollendorfer drops him in class where he's supposed to win; should be grinding late.
Long Shot - Demon Inside
Race 3 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $26,000, Claiming $20,000, 4-year-olds and up
Behind the Screen - Did the dirty work of trying to put pressure on Ghosttrapper and still close; double duty took its toll.
Smoocher - Tepid favorite in an even rated heat; was gaining fast in last, but moved much too late by Joe Talamo.
Long Shot - Courtly Jazz
Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $44,000, Claiming $50,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Foxy Games - Speedball will be helped by the temporary turf rail out 15 feet; speed has carried well all meet on grass.
The King's Lass - Was flattered when Mark Set Go won her next start; dead late closer will need a fast pace to chase.
Long Shot - Brendolyn
Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $33,000, Maiden claiming $75,000, 3-year-olds
Kaffeinator - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; wide post gives him a stalking position.
Tribal Mischief - Been away 9-months since facing state-breds at Del Mar; key for me is that Rafael Bejarano takes the call.
Long Shot - Delicato
Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $28,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Lovely Olivia - Broke her maiden over synthetic surface so the switch from turf is moot; beaten chalk is capable of better.
Accopela Choir - Maiden buster at Turfway showed a great affinity to synthetic surfaces; in good hands with Vladimir Cerin.
Long Shot - Warren's Appeal
Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $52,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Sterling Misty - Made my horses to watch list when blocked last time in the stretch; offers good value at 5/1 odds.
To B. Devon - Tepid chalk has good tactical speed to maintain her position; flattered when Lethal Heat won next out.
Long Shot - My Maloof Rocker
Race 8 - 1 mile, Purse $21,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds
Mixed Berries - When the Mike Mitchell barn gets this hot, you need to ride it out; figures to sit a trip and fight late.
Tripped the Light - Stretching out around 2-turns, he could sit closer to the early pace; Tyler Baze is capping a good meet.
Long Shot - Mass Appeal
Best Bet - Lovely Olivia (race 6)
Santa Anita Monday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/5/$28.20; Long Shots, 8/1/$6.80; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals - 1,245/300/$2,220.30; Long Shots, 615/78/$963.40; Best Bets, 70/24/$109.00
