TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1:20 p.m.
Race 1 - 7 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
Bettin an Sweatin - Like the turn back in distance from 2-turns to this elongated sprint; forgiving bettors will get a price.
Seven Point One - Tepid chalk in a difficult opener; among three who just broke their maiden, key is figuring who was best.
Long Shot - Army Officer
Race 2 - 7 1/2 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Prince of Darkness - Huge rider switch to Alex Solis, although he hates to be inside; Jeff Mullins barn is heating up.
Cool Commander - Joel Rosario is working his way into the Bill Spawr barn; closer has drawn way outside in recent starts.
Long Shot - Scotty Jones
Race 3 - 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $61,000, Optional claiming $100,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Green Lyons - Measure victory in her U.S. debut for Neil Drysdale; good next test with Del Mar grass stakes in her future.
Passified - Graded grass stakes winner last year, makes her 2008 debut off a 6-month hiatus; caveat is she may need a race.
Long Shot - Heathersdaddysbaby
Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Vicki's Mandate - Could be a clever claim by Peter Miller as this filly looks ready to graduate; he hires Rafael Bejarano too.
Bondi Babe - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; Paddy Gallagher also adding blinkers on.
Long Shot - Dana Sisstar
Race 5 - 1 1/16th miles, $100,000 Hawthorne Handicap, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Glorified - Stretching out around 2-turns for the first time; she has looked like a filly that has wanted to go longer.
Dawn After Dawn - She ran fine in the Madison when third to Bobby Frankel's filly Ventura; proven to love synthetic surfaces.
Long Shot - Santa Teresita
Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $36,000, Claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Mark Set Go - Has run two strong turf races off the claim by Mike Mitchell; suspect she's good enough to be right there again.
Angeletta - Leap of faith that Jerry Hollendorfer off the claim can improve her a lot; like that he teams with Joel Rosario.
Long Shot - Sweet Dee's
Race 7 - 7 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
Pictural - Was flattered when Secret Shuttle won his next start; will need to turn the tables on the chalk Roadside Rest.
Roadside Rest - Has been well bet in his last three starts; appears well suited to handle the bit of extra distance.
Long Shot - Stand Tall
Race 8 - 6 furlongs, Purse $54,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
Exceeding - There seems to be a lot of early speed, which could set up for his closing style; like the positive race shape.
Paul's Hope - Underlaid price on a horse that ran a huge race to just miss in last; he too should benefit from a fast pace.
Long Shot - Euroglide
Race 9 - 6 furlongs (turf), Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Unusual Strike - Leap of faith that Barry Abrams has another Unusual Heat who likes turf; what a final leg to the pick 6.
Masterful Miss - She has had plenty of tries, 9, but has been knocking at the door; spread race chasing a big carryover.
Long Shot - Enchanting Moment
Best Bet - Mark Set Go (race 6)
