HORSE RACING
TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1:20 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $16,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Tripped the Light - Ran well on the stretch out around 2-turns last time; tactical speed to sit an upclose perfect trip.
Backstroke - Finished just behind the favorite in last, so a role reversal would not surprise; saves ground under Tyler Baze.
Long Shot - California Demon
Race 2 - 6 furlongs (turf), $75,000 Manhattan Beach, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Starry Pursuit - Has found a new home on grass; she's won 2-of-3 on sod, her only bad one was in the grade 2 Providencia.
Silent Kitten - Makes her turf debut in a rugged spot; has improved enormously for John Sadler and keeps Rafael Bejarano.
Long Shot - Mini Do
Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $54,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up
Secret Shuttle - Unbeaten in three career starts; they may stretch him out soon, but for now he's gold as a closing sprinter.
Major Pleasure - Game win last time as the popular choice; moves up a condition but looks capable of a repeat performance.
Long Shot - Within Reason
Race 4 - 1 1/8th miles (turf), Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Foreign - She's favored, but that's due more to the connections of Bejarano and Neil Drysdale; jockeys can make a difference.
Quick Commander - Speedball figures to get an uncontested early lead; Michael Baze must lull the rest of the field asleep.
Long Shot - Indy Blaze
Race 5 - 1 1/16th miles, $175,000 Milady Handicap, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Zenyatta - She may not only be the best filly in the west, but maybe in the country; unleashes a powerful late kick.
Romance Is Diane - Futile chase of Zenyatta in last, not much will change tonight; still a very productive filly for Mitchell.
Long Shot - Double Trouble
Race 6 - 6 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Sleepin In - Second time out for Brian Koriner babies is a strong bet angle; no parimutuel value with Rafael Bejarano up.
Scout About - Fell in midstretch last time when making a good rally; expect another wide move and best stride in the lane.
Long Shot - If Not For You
Race 7 - 6 furlongs (turf), Purse $34,000, Claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Mama Lula - No excuse finish in last, but I know she's better than that; her race two back is fast enough to upset these.
All Set - Speedball favorite from the Bobby Frankel barn is one of his rare culls; no one claimed her last time for $28k.
Long Shot - Missoula
Race 8 - 1 1/8th miles, $250,000 Californian, 3-year-olds and up
Heatseeker - In a 4-horse field, I probably left out the winner Tiago; Jerry Hollendorfer has been a maestro with this horse.
Surf Cat - Powerhouse move last time in winning a softer race, the Mervyn LeRoy; he has tactical speed to sit a perfect trip.
Long Shot - Albertus Maximus
Race 9 - 6 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Claiming $20,000, 4-year-olds and up
World War - Ran evenly in last burning money as a Mike Mitchell favorite; suspect he's capable of big improvement tonight.
Common Trust - Few trainers can win off the claim from Jeff Mullins, Bill Spawr is one of them; adds blinkers on and the Mig.
Long Shot - Forest Danz
Best Bet - Zenyatta (race 5)
Hollywood Thursday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 14/4/$20.80; Long Shots, 8/1/$24.80; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Hollywood Totals - 441/114/$740.20; Long Shots, 225/21/$223.40; Best Bets, 25/13/$57.80
