HORSE RACING
TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1:20 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 1/8th miles, Purse $13,000, Claiming $8,000, 4-year-olds and up
Spriggzee - The tendency in a cheap race is to look for bombs, but this Jeff Mullins cull looks awful tough; he's a closer.
Wee Jinky - Steve Knapp likes to drop in class and win, so that's what this guy looks like; will be grinding late.
Long Shot - Grandpa Roy
Race 2 - 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $39,000, Claiming $50,000, 4-year-olds and up
Wild Buddy - Partial to speed types on turf when the rail is out, 15 feet in this case; Joel Rosario plays catch me if you can.
Minister Blair - Beaten favorite takes an important class drop to face these; Rafael Bejarano can save ground and fire late.
Long Shot - Cateclipse
Race 3 - 5 1/2 furlongs, $75,000 Willard Proctor Memorial, 2-year-olds
Backbackbackgone - Peter Miller sent this one to NoCal for a big MSW win over helpless foes; first start over Cushion track.
Jack Flash - Gets the parking lot post in an abbreviated sprint; figures to sit a trip with all the speed inside of him.
Long Shot - Matt's Marauder
Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Small But Mighty - Has more experience than the rest of the field combined; she has shown ability and must be respected.
Ima Offended - You'll have a big edge over me because you can see the post time betting; there are 7 FTS to cloud the issue.
Long Shot - Wendythethief
Race 5 - 7 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Demon Inside - Like the turn back in distance from a 2-turn route to this elongated sprint; should have power to close strong.
Lost Paradise - Typically I dislike horses that just graduated, but sometimes the light bulb goes on; win was super impressive.
Long Shot - Only Him
Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Major Smoke - Has been improving with every start, today may be the day; no early speed, he'll be closing fastest in the lane.
Victory Smoke - David Flores replacing Solis on the Bruce Headley horses; if Demon Inside wins race 5, this guy gets flattered.
Long Shot - Mort Robbins
Race 7 - 7 1/2 furlongs, Purse $51,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Dancing in Silks - Watch the replay of his MSW win, talk about overpowering; if he runs anything close to that, look out.
Partywithlarryz - Got going way to late last time; he seems to have a great relationship with Tyler Baze, they are reunited.
Long Shot - Earnednevergiven
Race 8 - 5 1/2 furlongs, $75,000 Cinderella, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Trifecta King - Doug O'Neill has proven in the past he can wins stakes with maidens; like that Bejarano fills the void.
Atka - Deserving favorite was very impressive in winning her debut; she figures to save ground and angle out in the lane.
Long Shot - Makasi
Race 9 - 7 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Soda Pop Kid - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; facing a pathetic field, he can dominate.
Fire Scout - In a field this lacking in talent, the FTS get a second look; note the high strike rate of Talamo-Koriner.
Long Shot - Athenry
Best Bet - Soda Pop Kid (race 9)
