HORSE RACING

TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK

By Richard Eng

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds

Southern Guy - Pedroza has an excellent success rate with trainer Mullins; dangerous with normal improvement in second start.

Embrace the Storm - Highly touted in debut, he did a classic pop and stop routine; another who should improve with racing.

Long Shot - Go for Cover

Race 2 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $57,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Big Bertha - Let's take a shot upsetting the big chalk just inside of her; her one try down the hill was a good one.

Pat the Cool Cat - Speedy sort is turning back in distance, a positive move in my mind; Flores is riding fantastic.

Long Shot - Red State Rules

Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

Quiet At the Top - If the track continues to play to speed, she has a puncher's chance; big class drop from MSW to claiming.

Homemade Brew - Claimed by the slumping West barn; still this filly has a chance to sit a trip and grind it out late.

Long Shot - Sidra Holland

Race 4 - 1 mile, Purse $36,000, Claiming $32,000, Fillies, 4-year-olds

Startin Fresh - For forgiving handicappers after a miserable effort last time out; her race two back is fast enough to upset.

Ready Maid - Tepid chalk in a wide open mid-level claimer; gets class relief from a much tougher allowance test.

Long Shot - Gold Datnoid

Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, 4-year-olds and up

Kalookan Boss - Has run two decent races for a low percentage barn; exits a bullet workout and could see a fast early pace.

Fiery Trippi - Grinder should see a punishing early pace to stalk and close into; hopefully will float higher in price.

Long Shot - Onetimeatbandcamp

Race 6 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $52,000, Allowance, 4-year-olds and up

Furioso Star - Speedy sort should be able to stalk the pace close up and grind it out late; fear is many gaps in his resume.

Global Heat - Dead late closer will see an honest pace to do his best work into; Flores is in the best form of his career.

Long Shot - Rudeameanie

Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $52,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 3-year-olds

Sky Cape - Gets class relief from a long string of stakes races for this; his two turf races at a mile are above average.

Belafonte - Disappointed terribly last time out at short odds; his race two back, if repeated, is fast enough to upset.

Long Shot - Professnl Courtesy

Race 8 - 7 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

In Daddy's Honor - Second best last time at an extremely short price; she figures to be difficult to handle with these.

Spanish Heat - Disappointed as a beaten favorite last time out; Bejarano takes over and at 5/1 odds is a square price.

Long Shot - Topper's Treasure

Best Bet - Startin Fresh (race 4)

Santa Anita Monday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/4/$25.00; Long Shots, 9/1/$11.00; Best Bet, 1/1/$2.60

Santa Anita Totals - 221/52/$393.20; Long Shots, 112/19/$222.20; Best Bets, 13/5/$22.80
