HORSE RACING
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
Two Turns - Like that Tyler Baze exits others to ride for HRTV’s Sean McCarthy; will sit a trip and come rallying wide.
Beyond Boundries - Suspect he was rushed in last and paid the ultimate price late; his prior races are fast enough to upset.
Long Shot - Bertie Boy
Race 2 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up
Trail Mix - Was stuck down on the rail in last and never looked comfortable; he loves synthetic surfaces and draws better.
War Scandal - Always fear Jeff Mullins in a race this nondescript; his horses look better, feel better and run better.
Long Shot - Mob Rule
Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $52,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Prime Catch - Ran a good race chasing speedball winner Dearest Trickski in the Sunshine Millions; gets big time class relief.
Tizzy’s Tune - Good win in last, now steps up in class to the next condition; she’ll be closing the fastest of all.
Long Shot - Down
Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $44,000, Claiming $50,000, 4-year-olds and up
Switzerland - You won’t find a tougher race on the card than this one; first time turfer was claimed by the magical Mullins.
Specialist Morgen J - Dead late closer from the white hot Mike Mitchell barn; gets important class relief for this try.
Long Shot - Cointreau
Race 5 - 1 mile, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds
Scibelli - Running out of chances, but gets a new pilot today in David Flores; parking lot post at one mile is a negative.
Red Redding - Logical chalk off a good second last time out; I’ve chosen a lot of Jeff Mullins horses today for good reason.
Long Shot - Jumpin Charlie
Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $52,000, Allowance, 4-year-olds and up
Swift Winds - Sure to get overlooked, he figures to be closing fastest down the hill; like the way Joel Rosario is riding.
Rateau - If speed is able to win this heat, this guy is the most likely one to do it; blinkers off to settle for Gryder.
Long Shot - Ballistic Heat
Race 7 - 6 furlongs, Purse $26,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Love Happens - Tyler Baze inherits this mount from the injured Bejarano; hard to believe he lost last time, another chance.
Warren’s Appeal - Been away 5-months, but that’s the main question, fitness; was badly overmatched in the Cal Cup.
Long Shot - Veils de Fleur
Race 8 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), $75,000 Pasadena, 3-year-olds
Meer Kat - Colt hasn’t adapted to U.S. racing, third try may be the charm; is reunited with Espinoza, comes flying late.
Sky Cape - Logical chalk off a sequence of good turf races; on the stretch out, he figures to be forwardly placed.
Long Shot - Ez Dreamer
Race 9 - 1 1/16th miles, $200,000 San Felipe, 3-year-olds
Shediak - In a race full of distance challenged pedigrees, this import looks like a marathoner; sits chilly for one run.
Georgie Boy - One of many sprinters stretching out, his best attribute is his heart; has fought hard in every race.
Long Shot - Indian Sun
Race 10 - 6 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds
Draft Choice - Beaten favorite didn’t run the race he is capable of; big rider switch to Flores for the money shot.
Flier Money - Shirreffs is known to give his babies a race before tightening the screws; expect a stronger try tonight.
Long Shot - Mr. Elroy
Best Bet - Trail Mix (race 2)
Santa Anita Friday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/6/$40.00; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals - 850/199/$1,447.80; Long Shots, 420/57/$707.70; Best Bets, 47/15/$63.80
