TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
South African Baby - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; need not be much today.
Star's Promise - Beaten favorite is due to win one of these; reunited with Jon Court, she'll be grinding late.
Long Shot - Sanmeli
Race 2 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $52,000, Allowance, 4-year-olds and up
Beyond Loaded - Has run well down the hillside turf course in the past; teams up first time with Gomez.
Furioso Star - Like the way he's coming into the race, albeit his turf debut; could be a Ron Anderson quinella.
Long Shot - Dakota Padre
Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Silk Thunder - FTS from the Harty barn has been working up a storm; most of the experienced starters look average at best.
Masterful Miss - Her race two back appears fast enough to defeat these; the wins are harder to come by for Talamo.
Long Shot - Earle's First Girl
Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $38,000, Claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds
Familiar Stranger - Trip to NoCal did not fare well as the 3/5 odds favorite; his best races are over synthetic surfaces.
Paul's Hope - Won off the claim by Mitchell, no shock there; is well spotted to win again, and to get reclaimed too.
Long Shot - Spot the Diplomat
Race 5 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $61,000, Optional claiming 462,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Siamese Cat - Start of the pick 6 with a $1.2-million carryover; former Motion filly should see a perfect pace scenario.
Ainamaa - Been away 9-months, but showed lots of ability back then; question is how tight Cecil will have her.
Long Shot - Jambalaya Joy
Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $16,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up
The Rye Man - Tiny edge in an incredibly difficult heat; last two times he ran for $10k, he won them both.
Norway House - Logical chalk hasn't won since Jeff Mullins had him last July; weak rider on a short priced horse.
Long Shot - Manhattan Express
Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming 432,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
True Suggestion - Was closing well last time and that may be enough to put him over the top; another very weak field.
Classy Attraction - The best kind of horse to put a weak rider on is a speed horse; all you ask him to do is break well.
Long Shot - Devils Martini
Race 8 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), $150,000 Buena Vista Handicap, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Black Mamba - Chased the likes of Citronnade and Nashoba's Key last year; this field doesn't nearly match that level.
Costume - Another who has been chasing better than she's facing today; failed thrice for Bejarano, now Gomez takes over.
Long Shot - Trick's Pic
Race 9 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds
Tiz Now Tiz Then - Has chased good horses in his last few starts; should see a lively pace to stalk and rally into.
Medjool - Tepid chalk in another difficult heat; he lost all chance when jammed up along the rail in the stretch.
Long Shot - Street Royale
Race 10 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $41,000, Claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Roanaway Bride - Gomez keeps riding back no matter how poorly she runs; suspect she's due to run her "A" game soon.
Britney Heat - Tepid chalk must make the body of the race off the also eligible list; tactical speed to sit a trip.
Long Shot - Pindaric
Best Bet - Beyond Loaded (race 2)
Santa Anita Sunday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 20/6/$85.60; Long Shots, 10/1/$14.40; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals - 517/117/$877.20; Long Shots, 262/36/$454.40; Best Bets, 29/11/$47.40
