HORSE RACING
March 28, 2008 - 9:00 pm
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 2 furlongs, Purse $36,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
Seismometer - Handicap the human connections in these baby sprints more than the horses; Pedroza and Kitchingman, thumbs up.
Deb's Mojo - Wesley Ward has already won some of these drag races; no problem using Julio Garcia to ride, he's a pro.
Long Shot - Conclusive
Race 2 - 1 mile, Purse $22,000, Claiming $16,000, 4-year-olds and up
Quasimodo - Wesley Ward is winning back his claim little by little; appears to have an overwhelming back class edge in here.
Courtly Jazz - His last three races are real stinkers, now Gary Mandella takes the blinkers off; we'll see if that's enough.
Long Shot - Count Orange
Race 3 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Soothing Touch - Frankel charge has been bet down in every start without winning, yet; Corey Nakatani is a hungry rider.
Dandy Mandy - Ran like a short horse in a short race last time; the longer distance will suit and should be a lot tighter.
Long Shot - Foreign
Race 4 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Lucky Mama - Sliding down the maiden claiming ladder to this bottom class level; it's now or never, or on to Phoenix.
Absolutely Smitten - Speedy sort will try for the lead, not a bad strategy in an awful bunch; may be a no passing zone race.
Long Shot - Nicolina U
Race 5 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $57,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Unusual Treasure - In as wide open a race as there is on the card, why not Chantal Sutherland, again; good tactical speed.
Sassou - A very good 6 for 6 first or second lifetime; Tyler Baze inherits the mount from the injured Rafael Bejarano.
Long Shot - Liberian Freighter
Race 6 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Beau Chant - Tepid chalk was a beaten favorite last time out; facing the weakest field in her brief career.
Colony Trick - Another beaten favorite runs consistently even races; the only horses I fear in here are the FTS.
Long Shot - Cean One Chris Too
Race 7 - 1 mile, Purse $68,000, Allowance, 4-year-olds and up
Mast Track - Frankel owns and trains this colt, he's brought him along slowly; another win and it'll be stakes for him.
Fly Dorcego - Draw a line thru his last in the Palos Verde and his resume looks pretty good; this may be his best distance.
Long Shot - Sahara Heat
Race 8 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $47,000, Claiming $50,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Heathersdaddysbaby - Chantal Sutherland had a choice and lands here; maybe she's too short a price for her to win on.
Musical High - Been away 7-months since Del Mar; she runs for the first time for a price tag, may have a back class edge.
Long Shot - Karlee's Kitten
Best Bet - Lucky Mama (race 4)
Santa Anita Thursday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/2/$8.80; Long Shots, 8/1/$7.00; Best Bet, 1/1/$4.80
Santa Anita Totals - 999/235/$1,743.80; Long Shots, 494/64/$802.40; Best Bets, 56/18/$79.00
