HORSE RACING
August 1, 2007 - 9:00 pm
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 2-year-olds
Zoomin Zabel - Has been well bet in every career start without winning, yet; tactical speed to sit a decent rail skimming trip.
Newton's Memory - Logical chalk nearly won wire to wire over Cushion track last time out; speed has been doing better at Del Mar.
Long Shot - Crafty Ruler
Race 2 - 1 3/8th miles (turf, rail at 7 feet), $85,000 Cougar II Handicap, 3-year-olds and up
Toasted - Very much like the trainer change to Mitchell; pretend that this is a horse he claimed and is improving many lengths.
A.P. Xcellent - Logical chalk nearly upset Lava Man in the Hollywood Gold Cup; will be overbet and many bounce off a big effort.
Long Shot - Macduff
Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
G.I. Betty - She runs fast enough to win allowance races, yet she can't break her MSW; figures to be an extremely short price.
Freedom Summit - Speedball tactics just missed in her career debut; draws the rail and speed is doing better over Polytrack.
Long Shot - Miss Bertrando
Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $32,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
Brother Man - Part of an uncoupled Jones entry, and this is the longer price horse; could see him getting loose on the lead.
Russian Veto - Tepid chalk is making his third start off a 9-month hiatus; he's a deep closer shortening up in distance.
Long Shot - Warren's Pepe
Race 5 - 1 mile, Purse $46,000, Claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds and up
Datticus - Dead game win last time and faces a similar type of field; like that Talamo, the one with soft hands, is taking over.
Jake Skate - Fell apart like a cheap suit last time in a turf route; suspect he can bounce back and be a much better price.
Long Shot - Nakayama Kun
Race 6 - 6 furlongs, Purse $64,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Windy - In a wide open sprint, you could do worse than vote for Frankel; adding blinkers on, will be good odds with Rosario.
Coco Belle - Speedball may have some company on the front end, but she's for real; gets class relief off of much tougher stakes.
Long Shot - Categorize
Race 7 - 6 furlongs, Purse $72,000, Optional claiming $100,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Vikki's Honor - Talk about an impossible race, any one of the 7-starters can win; been away 7-months, she has blazing speed.
Babe Hall - Tepid chalk has run best when settled just off the early pace; Baffert is having a miserable meet, and year, so far.
Long Shot - Ashley's Kitty
Race 8 - 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Awesome Feat - Dead late closer broke poorly in last and had no chance; she should be ready to roll in her third career start.
Mezuzah - Frankel filly has been away 13-months, but she's in the hands of the maestro; blinkers on from a ground saving post.
Long Shot - Forest Melody
Best Bet - G.I. Betty (race 3)
Del Mar Monday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 14/4/$23.00; Long Shots, 8/1/$8.80; Best Bet, 1/1/$4.60
Del Mar Totals - 192/51/$350.00; Long Shots, 97/12/$133.80; Best Bets, 12/6/$28.20
