HORSE RACING
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $29,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Bartok's Bling - Consistent sort though all of these fillies have just broken their maiden; don't mind the wide post with these.
Four Four Two - Claimed by Becerra who has done magical things first time out; like the turn back in distance from a 2-turn mile.
Long Shot - Almost a Ten
Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Rudeameanie - Logical chalk ran a winning race for this bottom level last time; if he repeats that, he is the one to beat.
Alpine Nugget - Nice improvement in last for the ice cold Headley barn; big rider switch to Talamo from Solis who is in Chicago.
Long Shot - Heather's Echo
Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Claiming $62,500, Fillies, 3-year-olds and up
Topper's Smiling - Took to Polytrack like a duck to water; she's proven she does not need the lead to succeed, expect patience.
Shes Got Skills - Been away 6-months, but all the Miller horses have come out running; taking a small, but important, class drop.
Long Shot - Stellina
Race 4 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $30,000, Claiming $20,000, 4-year-olds and up
Big Bold Cat - Been away two months, but returns at a career low class; like that Nakatani is taking the call for Becerra.
Deputy Lad - Won four straight starts over Cushion track, then was claimed by Marquez; only one workout since, interesting.
Long Shot - Will
Race 5 - 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $63,000, Optional claiming $80,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
My Little Margie - Import making her U.S. debut facing a pretty average group; debuts with Lasix, see if McAnally has her ready.
Wondrous Event - Logical chalk has won two straight turf routes, albeit in different states; we'll see if she keeps improving.
Long Shot - Wizzen Mizzen
Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
Yes It's a Cat - Mullins quite often lets his babies race into condition; this colt appears ready to run his best race yet.
Numismatist - Logical chalk should get a nice ground saving trip; should see a very contentious pace to stalk and pounce.
Long Shot - Finding Angelo
Race 7 - 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $68,000, Optional claiming $68,000, 3-year-olds and up
Uffizi - Ran in his SoCal debut like he was on a Sunday stroll; gets serious today and could break up the pick 4 and pick 6.
Caribbean - Drysdale charge returning off a 3-month hiatus; involved in some tough fields, could find this a little easier.
Long Shot - Kewen
Race 8 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $59,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Usk Poppy - Well regarded filly has struggled on turf in the U.S.; Cecil throws his hands up and tries her on the Polytrack.
Purrfectly Fitting - Strong run last time in return off a 6-month hiatus; if she repeat the race she'll be right there.
Long Shot - Meetmeinthewoods
Race 9 - 1 1/16th miles (turf), $150,000 La Jolla Handicap, 3-year-olds
Vauquelin - Let's for for a price in an incredibly wide open stakes; has been improving, now gets top turf rider Nakatani.
Ten a Penny - Won the Oceanside despite maybe being a short horse; if he improves off that win, he'll be tough to handle.
Long Shot - Unusual Suspect
Race 10 - 6 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Hennessy Rose - Ran big last time in a turf sprint in Inglewood; takes the blinkers off, should transfer nicely to Polytrack.
Minimite - Has run good enough to cash, but not win; meet leading rider Baze takes the call, like the turn back from a mile.
Long Shot - Brown Eyes
Best Bet - Rudeameanie (race 2)
Del Mar Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/4/$21.20; Long Shots, 7/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.40
