HORSE RACING
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Demon Inside - Exits a very strong MSW where I'm All Out won again and Barbeque Eddie won on Saturday; O'Neill adds blinkers on.
Buck Basolo - His late running style should really be flattered over the Polytrack; Talamo's first day as a journeyman rider.
Long Shot - Victory Joe
Race 2 - 1 mile, Purse $30,000, Claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds
Lofty M.D. - Ran miserably last time, so Greenman is taking the blinkers off; his race two back is fast enough to upset these.
Dunmore - Tepid chalk has done all his racing in the Midwest; claimed by Autrey, who is making his first foray into SoCal.
Long Shot - Rush With Thunder
Race 3 - 1 1/8th miles (turf), $400,000 Eddie Read Handicap, 3-year-olds and up
After Market - To run down Lava Man in a grade 1 SoCal stakes is saying something; Shirreffs colt is getting better and better.
Out of Control - Frankel is winning with everything so far this meet, at least it seems like it; improving by leaps and bounds.
Long Shot - Rob Roy
Race 4 - 1 mile, Purse $24,000, Claiming $16,000, 4-year-olds and up
Patriotic Flame - Claimed by Mitchell two back and he ran well in barn debut; is spotted perfectly to get his picture taken.
Prince of Gold - Logical chalk is dropping into the lowest class level of his career; tactical speed to sit a perfect trip.
Long Shot - Stylin Cat
Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds
Ididn'tdoanything - Could continue a great weekend for the Mitchell barn; gets class relief and he may be worth the $50k tag.
Hallowed Heat - Autrey comes to SoCal with all kinds of Midwest runners; I suspect they hold their class very well with these.
Long Shot - Pick Vic
Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $63,000, Optional claiming Fillies, 3-year-olds
Gotta Have Her - Tepid chalk in a wide open turf route; lost in a much easier NoCal first condition allowance, this is harder.
Blanche Sweet - Unknown quantity as she was privately purchased after one start in France; McAnally may not have her cranked.
Long Shot - Le Cirque
Race 7 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $63,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Smart Hit - Second start off a 4-month hiatus; has tactical speed to attend the pace or Isais can take back and make one run.
Big Bad Leroybrown - Just missed last time in a time fast enough to beat these; worked a bullet since and switches to Talamo.
Long Shot - Raise the Heat
Race 8 - 7 furlongs, $100,000 Fleet Treat, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
D Pirates Marker - Like the turn back in distance from 2-turn routes to the elongated sprint; figures to be closing wide fast.
Swiss Diva - Tepid chalk has been tackling tougher in her recent starts; Solis got to know her on the grass last time out.
Long Shot - Ooh Yeah
Race 9 - 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Wings of Freedom - The less starts the better at this bottom level; he improved in second start, has even more room to grow.
Owen Roe O'Neill - I thought he couldn't lose last time out, but he did; suspect will be a ridiculously low price in here.
Long Shot - Flip the Penny
Best Bet - After Market (race 3)
Del Mar Saturday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 19/3/$17.60; Long Shots, 9/2/$24.00; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Del Mar Totals - 62/17/$119.60; Long Shots, 31/4/$37.40; Best Bets, 4/2/$11.20
