TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Claiming $50,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Run Right Thru - Beaten favorite in last is placed back down for a claiming price; has good speed to lead of follow closely.
Topper's Smiling - Claimed by Guillot and made a tepid morning line favorite; Baze figures to sit still and make one run.
Long Shot - Foxy Games
Race 2 - 1 3/8th miles (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $63,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
Blue Torpedo - Figures to get a nice trip saving all the ground under Talamo; kid has uncanny timing for such a young rider.
Pair of Kings - Logical chalk from the red hot Mitchell barn; his Kentucky resume is pretty strong for his SoCal debut.
Long Shot - Straight Run
Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $33,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds
Gary John - Miller has an uncoupled entry in here so be careful; this guy came alive when claimed by West three -races ago.
Gotta Getcha - Ran a cropper last time off the claim by Peery; you made need to be a forgiving handicapper to like him today.
Long Shot - Icanmakeitrain
Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Bug in a Rug - Good value on this drop down horse for Hines; he puts the blinkers on and takes the weight off with Quinonez.
Atzimba - Favored out of respect for how well the Miller barn is doing at Del Mar; his babies improve a lot second time out.
Long Shot - Happyhour Atthebrig
Race 5 - 1 mile, Purse $36,000, Claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
Norway House - Really got revitalized when transferred to Cushion track at Hollywood; claimed by Mulhall, tries Polytrack today.
Ghost Actor - Dead late closer taking a sharp class drop for Knapp; for those who follow Knapp, that's his MO for winning.
Long Shot - Desert Sea
Race 6 - 6 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
Guns On The Table - Typical expensive Baffert baby is working smoke in the a.m.; parking lot post is OK on the Polytrack.
Drill Down - Of the ones with racing experience, his race looked best; started a step slow, but was cruising down the lane.
Long Shot - Big Mahogany
Race 7 - 6 furlongs, Purse $59,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Excessiveobsession - Bomb throwers will be looking for price horses like this at the Gold Coast; I like Koriner's training.
Suzzane - Monmouth import brings underrated eastern trainer Orseno to Del Mar; exits a couple low level stakes for this.
Long Shot - Time Tosay Goodbye
Race 8 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $64,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
Principle Secret - Ran into a buzzsaw at Monmouth in Idiot Proof who set a track record; returns home to face slower foes.
Taxi Fleet - Sneaky good races in his last time starts shows real improvement under Gallagher; he's a square price at 6/1.
Long Shot - Forest Phantom
Race 9 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 7 feet), $150,000 San Clemente Handicap, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Super Freaky - Finally catches a break in avoiding his nemesis, Valbenny, today; Court has been able to carve out nice trips.
Passified - Many close but no cigar finishes in stakes similar in quality to this; tactical speed to sit a close up trip.
Long Shot - Fleet Caroline
Race 10 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Look Deep - If she repeats her last effort, she's is the one to beat; must not bounce in second start off a 7-month hiatus.
Screen Giant - Terrific debut for Yakteen, a trainer not know for cranking them up first time; was a step behind Look Deep.
Long Shot - Katori
Best Bet - Gary John (race 3)
Del Mar Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/6/$44.60; Long Shots, 7/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
