HORSE RACING
October 6, 2007 - 9:00 pm
OAK TREE AT SANTA ANITA
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
Overextended - Logical chalk going 2-turns for the first time, bred by KY Derby winner Monarchos; takes the blinkers off.
Engadin - Is nicely bred to get better as the races get longer; Espinoza should try and save ground, grind it out late.
Long Shot - Guts
Race 2 - 7 furlongs, Purse $12,000, Claiming $10,000, 3-year-olds and up
Kaianagandaia - Outside posts are usually better leaving the main track chute; flattered when French Souvenir won next out.
Seven Nation Army - Dead late closer draws the tough rail, but has no speed anyway; cheap speed will set up his best rally.
Long Shot - Kingdom Come
Race 3 - 1 1/8th miles (turf), Purse $47,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Le Cirque - Underachiever may still come around one of these days; she is very lazy and should be hard ridden by Espinoza.
Mezuzah - Weak chalk is favored due to the Frankel barn; she just graduated her MSW, now facing winners for the first time.
Long Shot - Royal Prana
Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds and up
Wheaton Hall - Faltered facing tougher last time, his race two back would defeat these; can handle the synthetic surfaces.
Jitterbug Ball - Big switch to a stronger rider in Flores and dropping down in class; tactical speed to sit a perfect trip.
Long Shot - Outlaw Jones
Race 5 - 7 furlongs, Purse $12,000, Claiming $10,000, 3-year-olds and up
Queen's Image - Logical chalk is taking a big drop off the claim by Hess; it's a red flag move, but he is lone early speed.
Golden Royal - Dead late closer may see the well bet early speed back up into his face; he's a square price at 5/1 odds.
Long Shot - Primerica
Race 6 - 1 1/8th miles (turf), Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
Berkeley Castle - Frankel has an uncoupled entry in here, so I'll pick the longer priced one; failed on Polytrack in last.
Sir Lowry - Second best last time while setting fast turf fractions; Blanc is patient, so expect him to take back today.
Long Shot - James The Third
Race 7 - 7 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Light Amour - Hollendorfer off the drop is a solid bet angle; third start off a 5-month sabbatical can be his best so far.
Back Door Girl - Knight class dropper is running for a claiming price for the first time in her life; adding blinkers on.
Long Shot - Company Secret
Race 8 - 6 furlongs, Purse $45,000, Optional claiming $32,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Mary Ellise - Mitchell doesn't win with many first time starters like this; typically his babies improve the next time out.
Kalookan Year - Appeared overmatched in the Torrey Pines, then started poorly losing all chance; back in class and 1-turn.
Long Shot - Run Kitty Run
Race 9 - 1 1/4 miles (turf), $250,000 Clement L. Hirsch Handicap, 3-year-olds and up
The Tin Man - He has been money for the Mandella stable even as an ancient 9-YO; he's the only grade 1 winner in the field.
Runaway Dancer - Gave After Market everything he could handle last time at Del Mar; epitimizes a dead late closer on turf.
Long Shot - Toasted
Race 10 - 6 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Forever Irish - She's taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to claiming; will try to bottom out the field.
Jet Propelled - Another taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to claiming; short price despite a 1-year hiatus.
Long Shot - Rebecca's Baby
Best Bet - Overextended (race 1)
Santa Anita Friday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/1/$8.80; Long Shots, 8/4/$47.20; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals - 133/26/$182.60; Long Shots, 68/11/$125.60; Best Bets, 8/2/$10.20
