Hosier on point for Pahranagat Valley
October 3, 2009 - 9:00 pm
Cody Hosier's leadership and vision as a point guard were instrumental in Pahranagat Valley reaching the Class 1A state basketball final last year.
The junior is displaying those same valuable characteristics this year as the Panthers' starting quarterback.
Hosier passed for 287 yards and four touchdowns to lead Pahranagat Valley to a 48-0 1A Southern League victory at Henderson International on Friday.
"Cody is a point guard in basketball and a point guard in football as well," coach Ken Higbee said. "He's always been that accurate."
Hosier completed 11 of 14 passes, including all six first-half attempts. He threw for touchdowns of 21, 29, 7 and 32 yards to junior Kale Leavitt, who compiled 139 yards on six receptions.
"In middle school it was the same way," Hosier said of his connection with Leavitt. "We'd hook up every time he'd run out.
"He just runs such good patterns and has such good hands. All you've got to do is put it in the area and he'll go get it."
Dustin Poulsen added four receptions for 120 yards for the Panthers.
Pahranagat Valley (5-0, 3-0) maintained its unbeaten record heading into its showdown next Friday against visiting Spring Mountain (4-1, 3-0), which didn't play this week.
The Panthers' first shutout of the season came against a Wolverines team that entered averaging 38.5 points.
"We kept the ball in front of us and kids made tackles," Higbee said. "In eight-man football, you'd better be able to tackle in the open field."
Pahranagat Valley shut out two teams last year on the way to its third 1A state title in four seasons.
"We haven't shut a team out in a while," Hosier said. "All the teams (this season) have scored on us. It's pretty good not to have a team score."
Jensen Jones rushed for 58 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries for the Panthers, who gained 199 yards on the ground.
Keenan Gladd-Brown had 60 yards on 11 carries for Henderson International (2-3, 1-1). Jay Sutorius added 44 yards on 12 carries.
