Hotel shooting doesn’t send Hornets packing

Fortunately for the New Orleans Hornets, no players were in New York-New York's casino early Friday when gunman Steven Zegrean allegedly went on his shooting spree.

The team, which is participating in the NBA Summer League, is staying at New York-New York. The players didn't learn of the incident until later in the day.

"None of our players and staff were around when the shootings took place," team spokesman Dennis Rogers said.

The Hornets, who have stayed at the hotel every year they've been in the summer league, did not switch in the aftermath of the shootings, which resulted in four people being mildly wounded.

ODEN NOT FIRST -- When Greg Oden fouled out Friday night in his first NBA Summer League game, everyone thought history was made since this is the first year that disqualifications were put into the rules.

It turns out Alexander Johnson beat Oden to infamy. The Memphis Grizzlies' 6-foot-9-inch forward picked up 10 fouls earlier in the day against the Chinese National Team, earning the distinction of being the first player to ever foul out of a Vegas summer league game.

"The NBA asked us to change the rule," summer league executive director Warren LeGarie said Saturday. "The refs wanted some consequence for the players' actions."

In the previous three years, the foul limit was waived, which enabled every player to remain on the floor.

LONGEST SHOT -- As time wound down in the first quarter of Friday's Trail Blazers-Celtics game, Boston's Rajon Rondo looked at the scoreboard clock and let fly a two-handed shot from about 65 feet away.

His 3-point heave caught nothing but net.

According to summer league officials, the shot was the longest made in the event's history.

RECORD HALF -- Golden State rookie guard Marco Belinelli put on quite a show in the first half of Saturday's game with New Orleans.

Belinelli scored a record 24 points in the opening 20 minutes and finished with 37, just missing the league record of 38 set by Keith Bogans in 2004 when Bogans was with Orlando.

AMUNDSON INJURED -- Louis Amundson was having another strong game for the Philadelphia 76ers before turning his left ankle in the second quarter of Saturday's game with Detroit.

The former UNLV standout was held out of the second half and finished with seven points and five rebounds.

LAKERS DEBUT -- The Los Angeles Lakers will make their first-ever summer league appearance in Las Vegas at 3 p.m. today when they face Milwaukee at Cox Pavilion.

Listed on the Lakers' roster are second-year guard Jordan Farmar, Javaris Crittenton, the team's first-round draft pick, former UNLV forward Dalron Johnson and Coby Karl, the son of Denver Nuggets coach George Karl.
