USC receives oral commitment from 13-year-old quarterback

Southern California football coach Lane Kiffin might have his quarterback of the future -- a 13-year-old from Delaware.

The father of David Sills said Kiffin talked to the seventh-grader by phone Thursday and offered him a scholarship, which Sills accepted.

Sills trains with quarterback guru Steve Clarkson, who is based in Southern California and has a relationship with Kiffin. Clarkson's list of clients includes NFL players Ben Roethlisberger, Matt Cassel and Matt Leinart and Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen and USC's Matt Barkley.

The father, David Sills IV, said he spoke to Kiffin and was shocked to have his son receive the nonbinding offer. His son can't sign a binding national letter of intent until February 2015.

Reliever Gregg, Blue Jays reach terms on $2.75 million contract

Reliever Kevin Gregg agreed to a $2.75 million, one-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, a deal that could be worth $11.5 million over three seasons.

Gregg, 31, was 5-6 with 23 saves and a 4.72 ERA for the Chicago Cubs last year and has 84 saves in the past three seasons. He'll compete with Scott Downs and Jason Frasor for the closer's job.

Also: The Colorado Rockies finalized a $1.3 million, one-year contract with infielder Melvin Mora, who spent the last 10 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. Mora, 38, has played every infield and outfield position in his career.

Free-agent second baseman Adam Kennedy and the Washington Nationals agreed to a $1.25 million, one-year contract. Kennedy, 34, hit .289 with 11 home runs and 63 RBIs for the Oakland Athletics last year, his 11th in the majors.

Wyoming guard Davis becomes second player to leave team

Sophomore guard A.J. Davis has left the Wyoming basketball team for personal reasons, the second player to quit the team this season. He had played in all 22 games, averaging 10.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.7 steals.

Sophomore guard/forward Thomas Manzano left the program in December, also reportedly for personal reasons.

Also: Arizona placed its men's basketball program on probation for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons for violations by Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson related to an offseason AAU tournament in 2008.

The school noted that Olson, who retired before the start of the 2008 season, was dealing with health issues at the time, and it was later revealed he had suffered a stroke that affected his decision-making abilities.

The NCAA can modify the self-imposed sanctions.

Todd Leary, an Indiana basketball broadcaster and former Hoosiers player, was arrested Thursday night in Fort Wayne, Ind., on felony charges in connection with what authorities say was a multimillion-dollar fraud scheme.

Leary, 39, played for Indiana from 1989 to 1994. The Hoosiers advanced to the 1992 Final Four.

A special prosecutor decided not to file charges against three Arkansas basketball players accused of rape, citing insufficient evidence.

A university freshman had accused the players -- Marcus Britt, Glenn Bryant and Nick Mason -- of raping her Aug. 27 at a fraternity house party. The players were suspended from the team at the beginning of the season for violating unspecified team rules.
