Vikings' Peterson ahead of schedule with rehab

Star running back Adrian Peterson is ahead of schedule on his left knee rehabilitation, but the Minnesota Vikings won't promise he'll play in their first game.

Head athletic trainer Eric Sugarman said Wednesday that such a declaration "wouldn't be fair" to anyone. But Peterson left no doubt: He said he's "set" on being ready to take the field at full strength on Sept. 9, when the Vikings start the regular season.

The Vikings opened part of Peterson's regular rehab drills to the media, with dozens of reporters and photographers watching him run around at the indoor field. Peterson tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in a game Dec. 24.

Also: Former San Diego Chargers stars Dan Fouts, Rodney Harrison and LaDainian Tomlinson are scheduled to speak at a memorial service for Junior Seau on Friday evening at Qualcomm Stadium.

Also scheduled to speak are former Chargers coach Bobby Ross and former NFL safety John Lynch.

Seau committed suicide on May 2 at his home in suburban Oceanside. The linebacker played 20 seasons in the NFL, the first 13 with the Chargers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed second-round draft pick Mike Adams and seventh-round picks David Paulson and Terrence Frederick.

Adams, from Ohio State, was an All-Big Ten selection at offensive tackle in 2010 and made the second team last year despite being limited to seven games after serving a suspension for accepting improper benefits.

The Dallas Cowboys filed a brief in their challenge of a $10 million salary cap reduction by the NFL. Owner Jerry Jones said his team followed the rules before being penalized.

A hearing is set today before arbitrator Stephen Burbank on appeals by the Cowboys and the Washington Redskins, whose cap was reduced by $36 million. The two NFC East teams were penalized for overloading contracts in the 2010 uncapped season despite league warnings.

The College of Southern Nevada baseball team ripped Colorado Northwestern 14-5 to open the Region 18 tournament on Wednesday in West Jordan, Utah.

The Coyotes (36-21) blew open a 4-4 game with two runs in the botom of the third, four in the fourth, and a run apiece in the fifth and sixth before ending it on the run rule as Quinnton Mack belted a two-run homer in the seventh.

Cory Welch also homered for the Coyotes, and Chad Whiteaker was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. The six-team, double-elimination tournament continues today.

Also: Baylor women's basketball star Brittney Griner, who led the Bears to the NCAA title, is recovering from a broken right wrist sustained in a longboard accident. Coach Kim Mulkey said Griner will be in a cast for four weeks.

The Atlantic Coast Conference and ESPN extended their television deal through the 2026-27 season. A person familiar with the deal said it's worth $3.6 billion over the 15 years.

The agreement comes ahead of the planned additions of Pittsburgh and Syracuse from the Big East and would represent a 33-percent increase in TV money for each league school from the previous deal unveiled nearly two years ago.

Haye-Chisora bout draws
governing body's scorn

British boxing's governing body has warned that anyone involved in the fight between British heavyweights David Haye and Dereck Chisora will be stripped of their licenses.

The July 14 bout at West Ham soccer club in London will be sanctioned by the Luxembourg Boxing Federation because the British Boxing Board of Control refused involvement, since neither fighter has a license.

The fighters brawled at a news conference in Munich five months ago, leading to Chisora losing his license. Haye failed to renew his last year.

The BBBC says it will clamp down on any license-holder, including the promoter, managers and other fighters on the bill.

Also: Roger Federer rallied to beat Milos Raonic 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4) at the Madrid Open to narrowly avoid his earliest tournament exit in two years. Rafael Nadal had an easier time in his first match on the blue clay, as he beat Nikolay Davydenko 6-2, 6-2 in the French Open tuneup.

Defending women's champion Petra Kvitova lost to Lucie Hradecka 6-4, 6-3, and top-seeded Victoria Azarenka beat Ana Ivanovic, 6-4, 6-4.
