Beckham tears Achilles, will miss World Cup

David Beckham will miss the World Cup and most if not all of the Los Angeles Galaxy's season after tearing his left Achilles' tendon Sunday while playing for AC Milan.

His international career for England is all but over. It remains to be seen how much he'll have left for the Galaxy and Major League Soccer.

"He will miss the World Cup for sure," a person familiar with the injury told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity. The person said it was likely the 34-year-old midfielder will play again.

Beckham was injured without getting hit during AC Milan's 1-0 Italian League win over visiting Chievo Verona.

No. 1 Federer advances; Sharapova exits early

Top-ranked Roger Federer had to work a little harder than expected before beating Romania's Victor Hanescu 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-1 in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif.

Meanwhile, the women's field that began with six former champions is down to two following Zheng Jie's 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win over 10th-seeded Maria Sharapova, the 2006 champion.

Seventh-seeded Andy Roddick, Federer's potential opponent in the quarterfinals, beat qualifier Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan, 6-4, 6-4.

The men's field lost No. 5 seed Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, who withdrew with a fractured left wrist.

Also: An exchange between Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras during a charity match at Indian Wells has captured the attention of the British tabloids and blogosphere.

Sampras was teamed with Federer and Agassi with Rafael Nadal in a doubles match on Friday to raise money for earthquake relief in Haiti.

The players were wearing headset microphones so the crowd could hear them talking.

Sampras mimicked Agassi's pigeon-toed walk. Agassi, in turn, chided Sampras for being stingy. In his autobiography, Agassi criticized Sampras for being a poor tipper.

Sampras then served high and hard, forcing Agassi to duck out of the way. The crowd laughed throughout, and both retired players wore big smiles.

Neither showed up at the postmatch news conference.
