Player complaint leads Tech to suspend Leach

Texas Tech suspended Mike Leach on Monday while the school investigated complaints from receiver Adam James and his family about how the player was treated after a concussion.

James is the son of former NFL player Craig James, now a television sports analyst for ESPN.

Defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill will be the interim coach when Texas Tech plays Michigan State in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday.

School officials declined to identify the player, but James' family released a statement to The Associated Press saying it was him.

A person with direct knowledge of the complaints said that James, while unable to practice with a concussion, twice was forced to stand in a small, dark place for hours while the team practiced.

James was injured Dec. 16 and the next day was diagnosed with a concussion by team doctors, the person said.

The decision, as reported in the Los Angeles Times, represents the latest development in a suit brought by would-be sports marketer Lloyd Lake, who claims he gave cash and gifts to Bush and his family beginning in late 2004.

The state court upheld an earlier decision blocking an attempt by Bush's attorneys to force the suit into confidential arbitration.

"This will play out in open court for the public to see," said Brian Watkins, Lake's attorney. Watkins said that he hopes to schedule depositions for Bush, Carroll and Bush's parents as soon as possible.

A school spokesman said wide receiver Preston Minter, tailback Malcolm Johnson and cornerback Raphiel Lambert -- all freshmen -- had not made the trip. The sixth-ranked Broncos (13-0) will meet No. 3 Texas Christian (12-0) on Jan. 4.

Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor revealed he partially tore a ligament in his knee, claiming it didn't slow him down much while leading the Buckeyes to the Big Ten title. The Buckeyes play No. 7 Oregon in the Rose Bowl on Friday.

Top U.S. skier Vonn hurts arm in crash

Reigning overall champion Lindsey Vonn injured her left arm in a crash in Lienz, Austria, in the opening run of a World Cup giant slalom, an event won by Kathrin Hoelzl of Germany.

Vonn initially thought she had broken her arm after losing her balance and falling backward. An X-ray and MRI exam revealed no break, only a bone bruise.

"It's not a classic broken wrist, but a swelling," said Dr. Eduard Sporer of the Lienz district hospital, who added Vonn might still be able to race in today's slalom.
