Khan quickly KOs Salita to retain WBA crown
Amir Khan retained his WBA light welterweight title in stunning fashion Saturday in Newcastle, England, knocking down unbeaten challenger Dmitriy Salita three times before the fight was stopped after only 76 seconds.
Khan (22-1, 16 knockouts) put Salita on the canvas after barely 10 seconds at Metro Radio Arena. Khan then hurt him with a left, forcing another count, and followed up with a lightning-quick combination to send the New York-based fighter down on one knee.
Salita (31-1-1) got up but was unsteady on the ropes, and the referee stopped the bout to give Khan his first defense of a title he won by beating Andreas Kotelnik of Ukraine in July.
Also: Paul Williams earned a majority decision over Sergio Martinez in a 12-round middleweight bout in Atlantic City.
Judge Pierre Benoist scored the fight 119-110 in favor of Williams (38-1, 27 KOs), and Lynn Carter had it 115-113 for Williams. Julie Lederman scored it a 114-114 draw.
Martinez (44-2-2) is the junior middleweight titleholder.
Germany's Marco Huck (27-1) retained his WBO cruiserweight title with a narrow unanimous decision over Britain's Ola Afolabi (14-2-3) in Ludwigsburg, Germany. Two of the judges scored it 115-113, while the other had it 116-112 for Huck.
