Roger Mayweather assault hearing Jan. 15

A preliminary hearing for boxing trainer Roger Mayweather will be Jan. 15 in Las Vegas.

Mayweather, 48, is accused of attacking a female boxer he once trained. The woman told police that Mayweather attacked her Aug. 2 at an apartment he owned and was renting out.

He is charged with felony coercion and battery-strangulation.

Mayweather's attorney, Bucky Buchanan, said Thursday his client will plead not guilty because the incident was a misunderstanding.

Williams' slaying case now in hands of judge

The outcome of a 7-year-old manslaughter case against Jayson Williams now rests in the hands of a judge who will decide whether alleged racial bias and prosecutorial misconduct played a part in the retired NBA star's 2004 trial.

At the end of a hearing in Somerville, N.J., state Superior Court Judge Edward M. Coleman told lawyers he would rule on the case but he did not specify when.

No. 21 Nebraska rallies past No. 24 Missouri

Zac Lee threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Niles Paul, and Ndamukong Suh and Dejon Gomes intercepted passes to set up two more fourth-quarter scores in No. 21 Nebraska's 27-12 victory over No. 24 Missouri in Columbia, Mo.

Lee completed 14 of 33 passes for 158 yards and three TDs to help Nebraska (4-1, 1-0 Big 12) overcome a 12-0 deficit in cold and rainy conditions.

Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert, fourth in the country in passing efficiency with 11 touchdowns and no interceptions entering the game, completed 17 of 43 passes for 134 yards and no touchdowns.

Also: The UNLV men's swimming and diving team, five-time defending conference champions, was picked to win a sixth straight league title, and the Rebels women were ranked second as the 2009-10 Mountain West Conference preseason coaches' polls were released.

Erin Dalley scored the only goal, in the 74th minute, to give Utah a 1-0 victory over UNLV in Mountain West Conference women's soccer at Peter Johann Memorial Field.

The loss for the Rebels in their league opener dropped their record to 4-5-4. Utah improved to 6-7-1 and 1-1.

Several people were injured in an escalator accident after the St. Louis Blues' NHL home opener, according to published reports.

Several media outlets said as many as 12 people were sent to a hospital for treatment.

A grandson of NASCAR founder Bill France has been arrested on drug charges.

According to a Daytona Beach, Fla., police report, J.C. France was arrested early Thursday on charges of possession of narcotics and driving under the influence. The report states that an officer found a small bag containing a "white cakelike substance" during a traffic stop.
