Penguins' Gonchar out with broken wrist

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar will be out four to six weeks with a broken left wrist, his third significant injury in slightly more than a year.

Gonchar, who went into Wednesday's games third in scoring among NHL defensemen with eight points, missed the first 56 games of last season after undergoing left shoulder surgery.

The 35-year-old also played the final two rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs last spring with a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee, missing only two games.

Gonchar's latest injury occurred during a collision with a St. Louis Blues player during the second period of the Penguins' 5-1 victory Tuesday. Gonchar will not need surgery.

Also: Boston Bruins scoring leader Marc Savard will miss four to six weeks with a broken left foot.

The team's announcement did not say when Savard injured the foot.

The forward has led the team in scoring each of the past three years. He did not miss a game last season, when he had 25 goals and 63 assists for 88 points. He has four goals and three assists this season.

Ex-UNLV player Beck waived by Rockets

The Houston Rockets waived former UNLV standout Romel Beck and Garrett Temple, reducing the roster to 17.

Teams must trim their rosters to 15 players by Monday. Houston opens the regular season Tuesday at Portland.

Beck, a guard, averaged 4.5 points and 1.0 rebound in two games with the Rockets in the preseason. He averaged 16 points and 3.0 assists in the developmental league last season. He played with San Antonio in the summer league before signing a nonguaranteed contract with Houston.

Also: Orlando Magic reserve center Adonal Foyle had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.

The team said there's no timetable for Foyle's return. Foyle hasn't played in the preseason and has participated in only a few practices because of knee soreness.

Magic coaches have touted the 34-year-old Foyle as a strong practice partner for center Dwight Howard. Foyle probably wouldn't have received much playing time this season behind Howard and backup center Marcin Gortat.

Two UNLV men's players advance in ITA event

Two UNLV players made it through the first day of the ITA Mountain Region Men's Tennis Championships at the Darling Tennis Center.

Fifth-seeded Mehdi Bouras had a first-round bye, then beat New Mexico's Phil Anderson, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Eighth-seeded Luca Barlocchi also had a bye before his 6-1, 6-2 victory over UNR's Alex Daruty.

Also: Former top-10 player David Nalbandian is expected to return to the ATP tennis circuit in January at the Heineken Open, ending a nine-month layoff after hip surgery, tournament director Richard Palmer said.

The 27-year-old Argentine player, ranked 20th despite his absence, has won 10 career singles titles.

Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia and third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland were upset in the first round of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

Davydenko lost to former world No. 1 Marat Safin 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, and Radwanska was ousted by Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 6-3 in the women's draw.
